Tenants Feared Dead In Walker and Lafayette Collapse
A four story tenement at Walker and Lafayette collapsed at 1:40 am, trapping many residents including several Italian and German families. Firemen rescued some, but officials fear at least ten people were killed. eighteen were in the building with several still unaccounted. The structure, deemed unsafe, had warning creaks and a recent crack observed before the disaster. The Moses Taylor estate owned the building, leased to Herman Lentig the saloonkeeper, who was arrested.
