One Dead In Collision At Branchport NJ
Long Branch July 15 a collision between a gravel train and a northbound Pennslyvania express at Branchport killed gravel train engineer Peter F Tilton and injured several others. The wreck, caused by an open switch, threw the passenger engine down an embankment into the Shrewsbury River. Fireman H H Moore and engineer Melville K Packer had narrow escapes. the gravel engineer died, scalded and skull fractured. Wreckage disrupted the main line but service resumed via alternate tracks.
