Iceboat Scooter Race Planned Between Newbury and Great South Bay
A handicap race is proposed on Orange Lake New York between an iceboat from the Hudson River and the Orange Iceboat clubs and a scooter from the Great South Bay Scooter Association. Commodore Higginson of the Newbury Iceboat Club wagers a thousand dollars with Captains Thurber Hedges Graham and Dressel. Trials will be held on a two mile, four quarter course with wind from north or south. If conditions permit, the two fastest iceboats and scooters will race twenty miles for the championship with a one hour ten minute limit. The iceboat carries 45 square feet of canvas versus the scooter's 270, explaining the handicap. The iceboat is cross shaped with a crew, rudder, and sails. the scooter is a full boat with hull and runners, steered by jib and pikepole. The scooter originated in Great South Bay and can sail water or ice, delaying risks of open water and hummocks. Scooter captains claim to match iceboats in long races leeward and return, with quartering winds aiding their tacking.
