Mutiny on Chesapeake Suppressed in Philadelphia Harbor

Forty two Chinese sailors and firemen aboard the British steamship Chesapeake staged a mutiny near Point Breeze. Led by two foremen, they clashed with ten white officers and wharf watchmen until the uprising was quelled after a swift police response. Sailors surrendered to Captain Gray and agreed to return to the ship on the condition they could go ashore the next day. The ship would soon depart toward Rotterdam. Authorities suspect Chinatown residents considered using the men as cheap labor in city laundries. The mutineers had been in contact with Philadelphia Chinese residents likely during discharge at Marcus Hook or before leaving Singapore.
