Rebels in Moscow press on amid continuous cannonades while troops maintain control in St. Petersburg. Rebels report few gains but refuse to yield as Warsaw labor leaders call Poles to armed rebellion and Russian jails fill with detainees.
A six horsepower Panhard driven by James E. Martin, age 58, crashed into a ditch on Broadway Whitestone Road after a high speed passing maneuver. Martin died instantly. six other party guests including Mrs. Martin and Mr. Bacon were badly injured. The Mercedes ahead carried Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Townsend, and Stacey Clarke. both cars were returning from the Oakland Golf Club where a birthday dinner was held. The accident caused shock in Flushing as investigators reviewed the racing sequence and the ditch’s muddy bottom.
Moscow reports describe a day of heavy artillery and street fighting as rebels clash with troops across Trabnois Square, Sadovia, Karemaia and surrounding districts. William G. McAdoo refutes reports that August Belmont backs his tunnel interests or controls New Jersey traction. Belmont’s Ryan control and Public Service Corporation ties are linked by rumor, which McAdoo calls a fabrication. He emphasizes all tunnel interests are independent of any alliance.
New Haven December 24 Special Anson Phelps Stokes Jr secretary of Yale University added 800000 to the endowment fund bringing total raised to 3800000 of a 5000000 goal for a permanent endowment. Previous gifts include 2000000 announced at graduation and 1000000 from John D. Rockefeller with another million from unnamed graduates and friends.
Hegger Lesser, who registered at 69 Bowery, fired three shots at his head and survived with three superficial scalp wounds. He refused to give details as lodge inmates awoke to the gunfire and the night clerk found him in a smoke-filled room, the revolver beside him. Lesser claimed despair and said he wanted to die due to consumption.
