Appraisers Seek Civil Service Security in Congress Push
Appointive officials tied to the local customs service plan to urge Congress to place their positions under civil service rules at the next session. In New York Port there are twelve Assistant Appraisers, mostly Republicans, except Charles W. Bunn who has no political ties. If a Democratic administration wins, most would lose their posts to new appointees. Two Republican district leaders, Charles Lexow and Samuel Krulewitch, are active supporters of Taft. The Appraiser ship, a major post under Bryan’s potential control, is held by George Wanmaker, a longtime Republican leader, appointed in 1897 and elevated to Collectorship last year by Roosevelt.
