In Hartford a Highland Division passenger train collided with a work train, killing nine Italians and injuring 35. Debris blocked streets as rescuers, including railroad wreckers, freed victims. Official causes disputed. no immediate explanations from railroad officials.
Four killed and forty injured in a head on collision between a passenger train No 230 and a freight train on the Auburn Division of the New York Central Railroad, one mile east of Pittsford at 11 tonight. Several injured may die. engineer James Lyon and his son among the fatally hurt. Trainmaster S F Emery and assistant Michael Welsh rode the news train.
Eight Carnival Company attaches were injured when a Pennsylvania Railroad freight engine crashed into a dining and sleeping car on a siding in Sharon Pennsylvania. Three were seriously hurt and all victims were taken to a hospital. The fireman was said to be operating the engine at the time.
Special cablegram reports Mark Twain recounting a meeting with Queen Alexandra and King Edward VII in London. He explains bowing with hat off to the Queen, then keeping his hat on for the King, and a respectful clasp of the royal arm and shoulder. He notes English readers misunderstand his humor, contrasting wit in England with humor in America.
A Paris dispatch reports heightened agitation in Portugal after the Cortes dissolution and Franco's dictatorship. The Lisbon censorship blocked telegraphs and a private telegram says the King boarded the royal yacht Amelia, fueling speculation he may replace Franco.
Detective Callinan and Patrolman Roeder spent twenty minutes in a captive balloon 400 feet above Niagara Falls when the lifting mechanism failed. The balloon rose toward the falls and snagged on high power cables, nearly shocking the men. Ground crews steadied the rope and brought the gasbag down safely.
The excursion steamer with 400 aboard ran aground near Rockaway Inlet around 8 PM during dense fog. Passengers were evacuated by boat and other craft, including police launches and tug Four Sisters, struggled to reach the stranded vessel as search efforts continued through the night.

Detective Arthur Carmick of West Thirty-seventh Street Station spotted his 80 year old father in law Henry Dubbin among prisoners in an iron barred pen. Dubbin, a Cooperstown farmer, had been picked up for vagrancy after wandering from home for a week and forgetting his relatives' address. Magistrate Buck discharged him and Dubbin went to visit his daughter.
In a Denton Maryland funeral today Samuel Johnson a Black ventriloquist caused panic by “throwing” his voice into the grave as the coffin was lowered shouting let me down easy. He was later arrested as the mystery was solved.
Dr. Charles Godfrey of the Adjutant General's Office in Trenton reports the last signer of the Declaration of Independence is John Hart of Hunterdon County who signed on July 4 after being elected a New Jersey congressman on June 22 1776. The government and historians had confused him with John De Hart who resigned in 1778. Chauncey Ford in Washington acknowledged the federal records were wrong.
Gov Hughes will announce the 102 candidates for the Public Utilities Commission with possible picks including William R. Willcox and others. The selection follows a New York City political circle discussion at the Astor hotel with no consultation of state or county chairmen on preferences.

An immense crowd gathered at Oyster Bay to see President Roosevelt and his family visit Christ Church. The avenue was lined with automobiles and carriages as visitors arrived from a distance. The President traveled with his wife and children Ethel Archie and Quentin.
Walter Lamana an eight year old boy was kidnapped for six thousand dollars and strangled in a swamp near New Orleans. Authorities fear mob violence as Italian suspects and a woman tied to the plot are detained. A mass meeting at Elk Place prompted heavy police guard at Orleans parish prison. The boy's funeral drew a large crowd of local Italians.
Daniel O Neill se level two year old daughter from his separated wife Anna after entering through a fire escape window at 206 East Fifty-ninth Street. Police of the East Fifty-first Street Station search for him after the alleged abduction and assault during a dispute over support payments.
George Spencer a stock broker of 11 West Sixteenth Street New York was killed when his horse bolted near Sagamore Hill close to President Roosevelts home. The rider fell fracturing his skull. Dr Irving Barnes and a Secret Service vehicle aided the injured man who died at the Maxwell residence.
Harvard rowing manager Teddy Roosevelt took the entire Harvard crew for a sail on the Sound in the Government yacht Sylph sent from Oyster Bay. Yale oarsmen hosted Archie Roosevelt as their guest later that day and invited him to return to Yale quarters after a morning ride to New London on Gen Skidgy's Scraye.
Four women presidents of Muskegon were drowned when their rowboat capsized on Muskegon Lake this afternoon. A launch party nearby said one woman stood up rocking the boat before it overturned.
An 11 year old boy named William Reilly from 623 Greenwich Street wedged his head between ties after climbing a pillar on the north bound elevated line between Le Roy and Morton Streets. Motorman applied brakes and the boy was freed with help from train crew and taken to the next station.
Capt Kreuscher of West 152d Street Police Station led a raid on Fort George against fakers, cheap gamblers, unlicensed peddlers, and rowdies. By mid night forty eight arrests were made while the Gerry Society agents captured five minors peddling and eight more were taken to the Gerry society rooms.
A well dressed young woman escaped injury as a spirited horse drawing a light runabout bolted on Riverside Drive between 166th and 175th Streets yesterday afternoon. The horse ran nine blocks before Mounted Patrolman Albert W. McKean caught it. Max Mars of 311 East Fifty-seventh Street was in the runabout with the woman and leaped from the wagon to save himself.
Five mothers from Assumpton Illinois and a 17 year old girl are jailed in Taylorville sixteen miles away as they refuse bond. They sent a message to husbands urging them not to bond until the “bad man” Althea Bourland is driven from town. They accuse Bourland of bigamy and threaten to stay jailed for a year if no bond is posted.
Asheville June 23 Biltmore House closed Mr and Mrs George W Vanderbilt departed for Bar Harbor aboard a motor launch with few servants remaining at Biltmore estate indicating a halt in Vanderbilt family activity at the North Carolina home.
A 50-year-old Southern protest leader Marcelin Albert arrived at the Ministry of the Interior and confronted Prime Minister Clemenceau asking for Ferroul and other Arguellers freed. Clemenceau rebuked him for provoking South unrest and urged obedience to the law. Albert left, promising to return South and calm his followers. authorities report he would aid reconciliation but arrest was not pursued.
