Notices state June 5 1917 is the sole registration day for all men aged 21 to 31. Exemptions are narrow. officers and enlisted in US armed services may be excluded while in service. Penalty for non registration is imprisonment. sickness does not excuse, and a representative can file for those unable to register.

Heating Plant Expands as Alder men Approve Extension
New Ulm officials and New Ulm Heating Company directors agreed to extend the municipal heating district to include two additional blocks on Minnesota Street. The plan covers areas west of Minnesota from Second North to Third North, east side North Second to Grand Hotel, and west Minnesota from Center to South First. The project is funded, with stockholders receiving a distribution and a depreciation fund set aside. The city council ratified the agreement and noted ample steam for expansion, with coal supply concerns for the season addressed by securing extra cars.

Rev C G Hahn represented the Methodist church of this city at the Southern Minnesota conference of German Methodist churches in Le Sueur last week. The conference was well attended with many addresses. Women’s Foreign Missionary society officers were elected in Le Sueur with several New Ulm members present. Miss Julia Frank represented the local young people’s society.

City approves bid for new water well improvement
Matt Holland of Cannon Falls wins the city council bid to sink a 12 inch well for the water department at an adjourned meeting. Three other bidders include McCarty Well Co St Paul S Swenson Artesian Well Co Minneapolis and Lynne Bowler Co Memphis Tenn. The contract price is 7.90 per foot with a 200 gallon per minute guarantee. Work to start in a week or ten days with completion about thirty days after. Location to be decided by council before Holland's machinery arrives.

Woman seriously burned in kitchen accident
Mrs. Charles Lindemann of 223 North Minnesota street was severely burned while lighting the kitchen fire. Fire spread from her sleeve to her clothing as she was alone in the room. Mr. Lindemann extinguished the flames and a physician was summoned. The burns cover her body and arms with the face largely spared.

Red Cross Society Organized in New Ulm
Preliminary steps toward forming a Red Cross society in New Ulm were taken with a meeting led by Mrs. JF W Johnson at the Dakota Hotel last Friday. Temporary officers include Chairman Mrs Johnson and Secretary Mrs H W Beecher, with ten citizens' names forwarded to Red Cross headquarters as the process begins to establish a permanent organization.
