Graduating Class of 1917 Delivers Simple Ceremony at Turner Hall
The New Ulm High School class of 1917 graduated Friday evening to a full Turner Hall crowd. Forty-three graduates, with 22 boys and 21 girls, received diplomas as Dr. James Parsons of St Paul gave the address on The Foundation of Success. The program featured the orchestra and Girls Glee Club, with remarks from Superintendent Hess noting more boys than usual in the class and several graduates already taking jobs. Miss Wilhelmina Fuchner delivered the calutatory and Miss Aimee Krook spoke on Women and War. Valedictorian Henrietta W. Kogge voiced future city and school pride. Also reported: Ben F. Weller, longtime Chicago & Northwestern engineer, died in Winona at age 62.

Historic Trail Association Organized at Redwood Falls
The Historic Trail association formed at Redwood Falls on May 26 with officers headed by President Frank Hopkins of Fairfax and Vice President A B Kaercher of Ortonville. A rainout picnic was moved to summer. a routing committee urged Lac Qui Parle inclusion and possible extensions toward Madison or Appleton. Next annual meetings planned for Granite Falls in 1918 and New Ulm in 1919.

Old-Time New Ulm Teacher Dies at St Peter
John M. Broome of Mankato died May 29 at the State hospital in St Peter. A former New Ulm public schools head, he came to the area in 1871 after publishing a German paper in St Cloud. Born September 25 1826 in Albersweiler Bavaria, he joined the Union army in 1862 and later founded the Mankato Beobachter, retiring in 1894 due to ill health. He was a Mason and G A R member.

A rediscovered price list from 1864 shows yardage costs for prints 60 cents wholesale, Lancaster ginghams 40 cents, apron checks 52.5 cents, ticking 62.5, Canton flannel 77.5, unbleached cotton 60, bleached cotton 65 to 77.5, cotton thread 17 cents per spool, matches 15 cents a box. In 1867 flour 16 a barrel, molasses 1 to 1.25, sugar 20 cents a pound, kerosene 78 cents a gallon.

Red Cross Branch to Be Organized in New Ulm
In New Ulm ladies have formed a preliminary Red Cross group with a definite plan. The Minnesota Red Cross society branch will be completed next Friday evening June 8 at the Commercial club starting at 8 o clock. Men are eligible and urged to attend. A temporary organization was formed two weeks ago at the Dakota Hotel to begin work and meet state requirements. Mrac F. W. Johnson was elected chairman and Mrs. H. L. Beecher secretary to serve until the permanent body is formed.

Farmers win first round in Swan Lake drainage plan
Petitioners seeking to lower Swan Lake to reclaim about 4000 acres of wasteland won the initial county hearing in St Peter. Engineer F D Minium was appointed to study the drainage ditch while hundreds attended. If approved, 4000 acres would be restored valued around 100 dollars an acre, with broader implications for over 12 000 acres remaining as lake or marsh. Samson Dempsey and C J Laurish spoke for petitioners. John Schmidt and OC W Veronese represented opponents.

Commencement Set for Dr Martin Luther College
Commencement exercises for Dr Martin Luther College will be held in the College Chapel on Wednesday morning June 13 with fifteen students graduating. The program includes an organ prelude singing by the assembly address by Rev Robert Heldmann of Arlington Minn presentation of diplomas by Rev J R Baumann of Red Wing Minn and various musical selections. The second part features organ recitals by graduates and male choir vocal selections. A concert by students occurs Tuesday evening June 12.

Lutheran Synod Meet at Mankato Next Week
The Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Minnesota and surrounding states will hold its annual meeting in Mankato for a week from Thursday June 14 to June 20. Several hundred delegates will attend from the northwest. All professors and instructors of Dr. Martin Luther College and parochial school teachers from the city will participate.
