Americans Expected to Spend Heavily at Paris Exposition

Bankers estimate that American visitors to the Paris exposition will spend about 40 million dollars more abroad than usual this vacation season. In 1889 about 120,000 U S visitors attended, with New York to Europe cabin passengers spending around 92,771,950 dollars that year. The estimate relies on 77,590 cabin passengers at 1,000 dollars each and 101,213 third class passengers at 150 dollars each. The effect on exchange rates remains uncertain though a surge in demand for sterling could raise its price above current levels.
