Rockefeller Split Sparks Frank Rockefeller's Church Exit

A long running quarrel among the Rockefeller brothers centers on Frank Rockefeller leaving the Euclid Avenue Baptist Church in Cleveland. The dispute began in 1802 over a debt tied to the Franklin Iron Mining venture in the Mesabu range, with a $140,000 loan from John D. Rockefeller to Corrigan and Corrigan’s indorsement securing other notes. As tensions rose, Corrigan sought repayment and stock, while attempts to fund the loan through the Iron Range company faltered. Ultimately the Franklin Iron Mining firm sold for $500,000 to prevent a larger loss on debt and security arrangements with John D. Rockefeller.

Trusts in Austria Form Across Industries Amid Strikes

Consul Hugh Donzelmann at Prague cites a rising trend toward forming trusts in Austria across industries due to higher raw material prices and rising competition. He notes a government effort to draft a general law governing trusts and highlights coal strike hardships as a notable context. Austrian manufacturers with 5 000 to 10 000 workers kept plants running despite coal costs, while American tariff policy is blamed for limiting US access to Austrian markets, contrasting Austria’s protective duties.
