William Howard Taft sends diplomat Walter H Page to London as the United States appoints him ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to His Majesty. The coronation era ceremony marks a milestone in U S British relations.
Walter Hines Page, newly appointed U S ambassador to the court of St James, wore regular American evening clothes and long trousers as he was presented to King George at Buckingham Palace. Later the Earl of Shaftesbury presented him to Queen Mary.
In Greeley Colorado a man Robert Stanley and his wife were killed in a revolver duel at their ranch home sixty miles northeast of here. The Stanley family was wiped out. the young daughter’s body lay beside her father and revolvers lay at the sides of both spouses, according to a neighbor and the coroner.
The town recalls a dramatic 15 inning Baseball Day where New Ulm defeated Mankato after a tense 9th inning rally. Cap Mueller started strong, Pfeiffer saved, and Burk delivered the winning hit in the 15th as Cordes scored the final run. Sleepy Eye and Bird Island games followed with Sleepy Eye protests, then Springfield visit next Sunday led by Limmy Puhiman and Pfeiffer.
The Pirates defeated Nicolles 5 to 4 at the Fair Grounds on Sunday. Boots Hippert started strong for Nicolles with a two run lead, but New Ulm bats adjusted in the later innings. Schaeffer delivered a three base hit, and next Sunday the Pirates travel to Winthrop for a game at Winthrop.
Dr Harry A Tomlinson longtime superintendent of the state hospital for the insane at St Peter died in Willmar after a brain hemorrhage. A Penn graduate, he led reforms at the asylum and later headed the state inebriates hospital. He leaves a widow and daughter. Sixteen Knight Templars attended the funeral with Masonic rites.
