The Board of Education met in special session to award bids for the North Ward school. Charles Keiser won the masonry and carpentry contract at 13776, Otto Tappe 15049, Weilands andGregemann 13900. Gulden and Hippert secured the plumbing for 1012, with Emmerich bid 10153 as the only other offer. The heating plant contract went to Lewis and Kitchen of Chicago, with no competitive bids. Building is to start at once and total cost is expected just under 160,000 not including furnishings.

Knights of Columbus Banquet Draws 300 Knights
The Knights of Columbus conclave at the Catholic school auditorium drew about 300 members. Forty four candidates received three degrees. free degree at 10 am, second at 2 pm, Ged degree by Minneapolis team led by Nightingale and Donahue. About 150 visitors from multiple towns attended. More than 400 Knights and ladies dined at 7:30. Father Schlinkert acted as toastmaster. Father Dumphry gave the main address, with W. J. Moriarity and Nightingale also speaking. Music featured a violin solo by Albert Grovenfelder and a vocal by Mr. Healey. Donahue provided humor.

A lightning strike destroyed the Kiinglers’ barn on the Zelg place amid a severe rainstorm last Tuesday. Firefighting efforts were hindered by flood and wind. R. Plefferle’s residence was struck with minor damage. Cottonwood and Linseo farmers faced losses from tumbled and moved barns. Trees uprooted, telephone lines down, and widespread storm damage noted in Belgrade. vegetation benefited from rain despite heavy losses.

New Chattel Mortgage Law Effective
Yesterday the new chattel mortgage law took effect requiring all bills of sale chattel and conditional sale contracts be filed with the Register of Deeds. Major Buschiers Holds Position As Regimental Commander
In a murky wartime local item Col. Buschers and Captains Pfaender and Quane faced protests over a regimental election.
