Uniform Weights and Measures Law Deepens in Minnesota

The 1913 legislative session enacted a uniform weights and measures act affecting dry and liquid measures, cords and tons, with penalties for noncompliance. Ralph W. Aviation Meet Sparks July Events in New Ulm

New Ulm plans two days of aviation stunts led by Jimmy Ward, a Curtis biplane aviator. Ward brings three mechanics, with wife issues delaying Cleveland flight. crowd expected large, events include motorbike and auto jet races, baseball if possible, and fireworks rescheduled for Sunday evening.

Fire Believed To Spark Berg Building Blaze In Town

A late night blaze gutted the Roy L. Berg building once occupied by a second hand shop on Minnesota Street. Firefighters faced delays as alarms failed to sound promptly, but surrounding rainfall helped limit damage. Roof and garage suffered heat, with repairs paid in the amount of 770.8 dollars to Berg. Everling Electric Co suffered glass losses while Fred Brust’s furniture was damaged leaving overall losses modest given the fire’s origin possibly due to spontaneous combustion in varnishes and oils.

Council Transacts Routine City Business and Grants Bids

The City Council heard complaints from Basi George Dill about flood damage to his new greenhouse near the fair grounds and agreed to inspect the site. Union Hospital Association sought alley and utility improvements for a block south of Center Street, requiring written petitions. A liquor license transfer for Joseph Groebner was denied. he applied for a new license expiring April 15, 1914. The council refunded 287.91 to the late Charles Forster estate. Herman Held was added to the Board of Health. Bids for 2000 tons of soft coal were requested for delivery in 1913 and 1914. The city scale issue was settled by temporarily hiring Otto Hartmann. Parade participation was debated. two councilors opposed. Work on North Franklin street grading and South German street sewer proceeded, and a Citizens State Bank building permit was granted. A thunderstorm caused a house fire and extensive plaster damage after a lightning strike on the Spelbrink home with no injuries. Christ Spelbrink installed heavy lightning protection.
