Mass Meetings Favor Embargo in Mankato
The largest mass meeting in Mankato history drew over 1500 people at the Mankato Theatre to urge neutrality in the European War. Delegates adopted resolutions demanding Congress pass laws to enable a wartime embargo on contraband while exempting foodstuffs. A Red Cross drive raised 200.90, with proceeds later sent to Red Cross authorities. Speakers included Prof. A Ackermann New Ulm German language address on causes of the war and Mr Stelzle arguing for Germany’s holy war, plus remarks by George W. Scherer and Prof. Henry D. At the Second Regiment Band annual meeting a concert was planned and a committee of John Henle Christ Backer and John Wartha was formed to set the date and arrange details. Surplus from the concert will go to the Armory fund. The year 1915 brought strong finances and reports show a very successful year.
