Census Supervisor W. Gilmore at Pipestone Minnesota received blank applications from the Census Bureau for census enumerator positions. Applications must be returned by January 31 after a February 5 test, with two endorsements required from unrelated adult community members.
Minnesota state sheriffs gathered in St Paul for their annual convention and re elected all officers W A Gerber of St Paul as president Oscar Lubby of Albert Lea as vice president J A Lundgren of Alexandria as secretary and W J Bates of Duluth as treasurer They adopted resolutions opposing capital punishment and pledged to seek changes in delinquent personal property tax collection laws.
Government auditors urged by Governor Adolph Eberhart recommend ending passes at the state fair with limited exemptions for newspaper reporters covering the event. They argue the fair spends too much on midway attractions and too little on agriculture, urging more emphasis on apples. The report notes a $250 payment to W C Heilbron for a new accounting system installed per Anton Schaefer’s recommendations.
A civil service examination for male stenographers in all branches of departmental government service will be held at the federal building in St Paul on January 25. The secretary of the civil service board, Joseph M. Shoemaker, says vacancies are expected soon in stenographic roles, with no Minnesota eligibles currently on the list. An additional examination will create eligibles for junior topographers in the geological survey with salaries from 720 to 1200 dollars annually, with permanent appointment from the junior topographer register and a February 16 exam for temporary topographic aids during field season.
The charge against William L. Schwandt and his wife of Sanborn was dismissed for lack of evidence tying them to H. J. Ledbeter’s murder. The couple is free on bail. Mrs Ledbeter returned from Spooner to Mankato to decide her future. Accusations may follow against others. grand jury meets first week in February. Public opinion divides after acquittal.
The 15th annual convention of the State Association of Mutual Township Insurance companies met at the old Capitol in St Paul. Delegates from Nicollet included Ole Peterson of the State Creamery and Cheese Factory Fire Insurance Co and John Q Currier of Nicollet representing the New Sweden Township Mutual. Peterson spoke on changes in laws governing township mutuals. Currier on a feasible Rescue Fund. Officers were re elected: A D Stewart pres in Redwood Falls Ole Peterson vice pres and K E Bullis West Concord sec and treas. St Paul will host next year.
Eastern coal and coke men led by Cincinnati figures including C. P. Taft brother of President Taft seek gas franchise rights in Minnesota towns of 5000 or more. They formed the New Ulm Gas Company, a foreign corporation, with articles filed in the secretary of state. The capitol contemplates their recent corporate move and possible possession of the gas franchise.
The Minnesota State Veterinary Medical Association held its 13th annual convention at the Merchants Hotel in St. Paul with about 120 members present. A Friday clinic on surgery featured a vaccination demonstration using Shog cholera serum by Dr. W. L. Beebe. Elected officers include Dr. J. P. Anderson of Rochester as president, Dr. RR Donaldson of Argyle as first vice president, Dr. Edwin Mackey of Mandan, N. D., as second vice president, and Dr. G. E. Leech of Winona as secretary.
State auditor compiles figures for the tax commission showing 3513 saloons in Minnesota paying a total annual license of 2,600,950 dollars. Hennepin leads with 534 saloons, St. Louis 488, Ramsey 433. one county has no licensed saloons.
The Minnesota State Fair elected John M. Underwood of Lake City as president after a contentious session in St Paul. New officers include C. M. Griggs and K. P. Stillwell, with a slate of managers from Wheaton, Duluth, Hutchinson and Lake Park. The body urged county and state funding parity and a 50 percent annual increase for county fairs to boost farm improvement and farmer usefulness.

Craig of Duluth as president D B Hall of Buffalo Lake as first vice president C B Crandall of Mandolph as second vice president Andrew Ross of St Paul as secretary and C W Glotfelter of Waterville as treasurer The Minnesota Sheep Breeders association also met at the capitol with Pres Thomas Kough of TAPPI presiding and speeches on Feeding Sheep for Market The Best Kind of Sheep for Minnesota and Wool given by A L Sayers C W Glotfelter and M Brown respectively.
C J Klein, proprietor of the Clifton house in Mankato since 1882, died Wednesday of Brights disease. He was 75, served in the war, and is survived by a wife, a son, and a daughter.
Charlot, hereditary chief of the Flathead nation, aged 80, dies at his home in Arlee. He was wealth and held land on Flathead Lake shore. Charlot helped negotiate early treaties that opened Jesuit missions and kept peace with travelers in Flathead lands.
The Minnesota Territorial Piano associations met last Tuesday at the old capital and arranged the annual banquet set for February in Minneapolis.
