Booster trip brings Brown county towns alive with welcome
A booster tour for the Brown County Agricultural Society drew over 100 citizens and merchants in 32 cars to Searles Hanska Comfrey Springfield Cobden Evan Sleepy Eye and Essig. Rain delayed start then sunshine brought large crowds as Hofmeister’s band played at each stop. The tour showcased local growth including new brick bank and hall in Cobden and new school and church buildings in Comfrey. The party concluded in Essig with a final band program before returning home.

New Ulm Men to Face Commissioners Friday
Mayor L A Fritsche County Auditor L G Vogel and Treasurer Henry J Berg were invited to appear before the Minnesota Safety Commission to explain their part in the recent anti draft meeting. They will not travel to the Capitol until Friday and gave no statement on the expected stance. The meeting is set for 2 30 Friday afternoon. Oats threshing is under way near Morris as David Moser of Horton township sparked action in Stevens county per the Morris Tribune.

Blue Sky Law 18 Drastic Measure Powers Over Securities

July Weather Report Shows 1917 Hotter Than 1916
Local observer Alex Henle reports July 1917 reached a 100 degree high on July 28, with 45 degrees minimum on July 3 and three inches of precipitation. The month had 19 clear days, nine partly cloudy, three cloudy, seven thunderstorm days, and a southerly wind, amid a bustling August automobiling Sunday.

Exemption Board Drafts Men in Brown County
About two hundred drafted Brown County men appeared before the exemption board at the Armory to seek exemptions. Sheriff W. J. Julius and Dr. Geo. B. Weiser chaired, with County Attorney A. Frederickson added by state order. Dr. Weiser and Dr. J. L. Schoch conducted medical exams. as many as 57 examined in one day. Roughly 75 percent seek exemption, to be reviewed later by the district board in Mankato and federal physicians.

Many Sportsmen Gather for Belle Lake Campout near Hutchinson
Sportsmen from Minneapolis St Paul Duluth and elsewhere plan the Seventh annual Campfire club outing at Belle Lake near Hutchinson. Guests include the Minnesota Game Protective league and the State Game Farm release 100 ring neck China pheasants hatched with 2000 others. Pheasants will fly from the grounds to woodland homes as a historic staging unseen on American campgrounds. Also noted is a milk price rise to 10 cents a quart in Minneapolis amid wartime strain.

Ancient guide post on Hanska road blown down
The old guide post at the intersection of Hanska road and the old Mankato highway on the hill above Fort Wengler farm has been blown down and needs prompt attention. The tin sign and landmark have stood for nearly sixty years and are urged to be preserved by authorities.

Brown County Fair Adds New Youth Contests and Canning Exhibit
The Brown County Agricultural Society announces new attractions at the upcoming fair. A corn-growing contest for boys 10 to 18, with prizes from 50 cents to 15 dollars, will be held on the last two days. A Children’s Pig Contest for ages 10 to 18 offers thirteen prizes up to ten dollars. The Sleepy Eye School canning exhibit features tomatoes and cauliflower with top scorers sent to the Minnesota state fair at Midway. Will Survey Swan Lake Preparatory for Ditch
F D Minium, engineer appointed by Nicollet county, to survey a route for a proposed ditch that would reclaim Swan Lake area and thousands of acres of land. Work should start soon and likely finish after next spring, with most surveying to be done in winter when marshy ground freezes, as access by boat or foot is impractical.
