Youth Drowns in Minnesota River in Cambria
Robert Hammel of St Paul, 17, who recently graduated from St Paul High School, drowned while bathing in the Minnesota river below Cambria on Sunday. He could not swim and sank after calling to companions. his body was recovered late Monday. He had come to Cambria to help on a nearby Wallace Williams farm.

Mrs Bertha Bierbauer widow of Jacob Bierbauer of Mankato who helped defend New Ulm in 1862 died at her daughters home in St Paul Monday morning Born in Saxony Germany May 9 1841 she came to America in 186 with her parents and settled in Mankato Her husband was a pioneer pale of Mankato The Methodist and Lutheran Aid societies redecorated their rooms at Union hospital and other groups plan to follow soon.

Gets Jail Sentence For Disorderly Conduct
James Murray, a transient who said he lived partly in Milwaukee, was arrested Monday night for causing a disturbance near the Armory. He struggled with Sgt. Forest English and Chief Alvin Harmening during arrest and pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly. Justice Henningsen imposed a $25 fine or twenty days in county jail. He paid the fine.

Brown county drafted men to appear before the exemption board at the Armory next Friday August 4. The first twenty five will appear that day and twenty five more daily until the county quota of 156 is filled. The board of Sheriff W J Julius County Auditor L G Vogel and Dr Geo B Weiser has mailed notices. the official list shows only minor changes from last week.

Sleepy Eye Policeman Tells of Unusual Feat
A New Ulm attorney won a justice court case in Sleepy Eye after a police testimony mix up. The arresting officer claimed the defendant held a rival in a thumb bite and urged the jury to test it, but the jurors returned a not guilty verdict after a brief deliberation.

Big crowd hears draft discussion in New Ulm parade
Nearly 8 000 residents from Brown and Nicollet counties gathered at Turner Park to hear a peaceful discussion of the draft and war issues. A 2,000-strong draft parade preceded the meeting led by Hofmeister’s and New Ulm Concert bands. Mayor L A Fritsche opened remarks urging lawful, peaceful discourse while preserving the draft law.
