Barn Fire Destroys Slagle Farm Near Frederick
A large barn on William Slagle’s farm near Stull’s 23rd, twelve miles north of Frederick, burned Sunday afternoon. All contents were destroyed including grain, hay, farming machinery, and harness. Five horses perished along with two colts and one cow in the flames.

Total losses over five weeks run about 29 million with operators facing coal price losses and wages, while costs to police and idle workers add to the bill. Authorities say few miners quit yesterday and some superintendents report higher activity at engines and pumps, contradicting labor leaders who claim many stayed away.

Pennypacker Nominated for Governor at State Convention
At Harrisburg on June 13 Judge Samuel W. Pennypacker of Philadelphia was nominated for governor over Attorney General. John F. Elkin of Indiana County won the nomination for governor by a 204 to 152 vote, with ex-State Senator William M. Brown of NewCastle and Major Isaac S. Brown of Erie named for lieutenant governor and secretary of Internal affairs respectively. Senator Quay was unanimously chosen state committee chairman, to conduct the campaign for the ticket, as the platform endorsed Roosevelt’s administration, tariff principles, ballot reform, and anti trust actions.

Land Dispute Ends in Murder in Oklahoma City
W. E. Johnson, vice president of Classen Real Estate, killed yesterday in a land claim dispute in Oklahoma City. Johnson fatally shot W. T. McMichael after a confrontation over a cow on Brown's lot. Brown, defender of Johnson, died five shots later at McRichtel. Brown and Johnson had attempted to move the cow when McMichael fired. Johnson died ten minutes after the shooting.

Tragedy at Coatesville Widow Shot by Suitor
In Coatesville Pennsylvania on June 16 Mrs Rachel Sadler a widow was shot and killed by Harry W. Ricer of Newcastle during a confrontation over a revolver. A struggle with another woman resulted in the weapon firing and Ricer dying from a self inflicted wound.

Wild Race For Free Land At Facetel is Idaho Run
In Facetel Idaho on June 18 at noon about 1 200 men and boys surged across the Wort Hall Reservation line in a rush for homestead and mineral lands. Most rode horses or ponies and carried arms while another thousand moved with pack mules. By early afternoon Pocatello was nearly deserted as multiple claimants aimed at the same parcels.
