Navajo fire ban remains in effect for Independence Day

Grants cancels Fourth of July fireworks display in drought

Grants city leaders canceled the Fourth of July fireworks over extreme drought and fire risk. Fire Chief Valencia and the fire department urged restraint, noting several days of rain are needed to ease conditions. The Chamber of Commerce supported the decision and funds may fund a fall chili fiesta display. Fireworks vendors sell limited ground displays amid bans.

Milan Cops Expected to Stay on Job

Milan area law enforcement leaders say they are not worried about losing street officers to corrections jobs at the new federal prison. Corrections Corporation of America won a federal contract to house low level inmates, with starting pay for officers rising to about 11 to 12 dollars an hour, far above Milan Police Department wages. Police Chief Alfonso Martí notes Milan officers begin at 6.50 per hour, rising to 8.50 after certification.

Grants guard back on job after alleged inmate battery

Grants Corrections Corporation of America officer Michael Figueroa, accused of kicking an inmate, was removed from administrative leave and is back on duty. Warden Bill Snodgrass said an internal probe will occur and no charges had yet been filed in Magistrate Court. The incident involved inmate Lucinda Begay who said she was awoken in the wrong cell and received a kick during a confrontation.

Gillson set to take over as Gallup DA in late fall

Karl Gillson won the Democratic nomination for Gallup-McKinley County district attorney and faces a smooth transition since no Republican challenger exists in November. He plans to reorganize staff but vows no immediate layoffs, respecting loyal workers of current DA Mary Helen Baker. Retiring GIMC workers recalled decades of service

Lorana Meza and Caroline Nez honored at a Gallup Indian Medical Center retirement barbecue attended by 500 plus staff. Meza, a 35 year veteran, joined in 1965 from Ohio and helped during a 1973 AIM takeover. Nez, with 37 years, native to Laguna Pueblo, worked in Phoenix Albuquerque Navajo areas and Gallup for 14 years. Both plan hobbies travel and time with family.
