Tribes Land Back At Fort Wingate After Century of Occupation
After more than 100 years of U.S. government occupation the first parcel of Fort Wingate land over 15 000 acres was returned to the Navajo and Zuni tribes. The ceremony at McFerren Lake marked the start of four phase land transfer with the Army retaining 8731 acres for 10 years for ballistic missile defense. Leaders spoke of unity and future economic development as Gallup officials watched.

July Fourth events set in Gallup and Window Rock
Gallup hosts Party in the Parks with KGAK starting at 3 p.m. and winding down at 9 30 p.m. Window Rock holds a ro deg and other events across the long holiday weekend. All government offices including the post office close Tuesday for the Fourth of July. Harold Runnels Pool opens 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Neighborhood Center Pool 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Solid waste runs normal. Gallup Independent will not publish Tuesday and resumes Wednesday.

Gallup Independence Day fireworks event to be scaled back
The Gallup sports complex hosts a July 4 celebration sponsored by City of Gallup KGAK Don Gonzales with three bands and 100 vendors. Fireworks will use 600 shells, 130 in the finale, shortened from 45 to 30 minutes. Watermelon and pie eating contests with grill and stereo prizes amplify the festivities.
