Ci bola County investigators collar Manuel Clark aged 60 of San Rafael and Richard Smith in his late forties or fifties after arrests tied to a private property dig at El Malpais State Park. Police say one suspect hired workers from Arizona to bring heavy equipment for excavation on Memorial Day weekend. Archaeologists and police will assess the site to determine artifacts removed. Cibola National Forest Reopens With Restrictions
All ranger districts in Cibola National Forest except Sandia will reopen at 8 a.m. Friday with level three restrictions still in place after a 28 day closure to curb wildfire risk. Mount Taylor District had been closed since June 3 due to extreme dryness and fire danger. Ranger Chuck Hager in Grants announced the decision after a teleconference with other rangers. Officials expect monsoon rains to begin, then drying, followed by more rain around July 4, signaling a seasonal transition. Forest Supervisor Liz Agpaoa in Albuquerque was to sign the reopening order. Campers and picnickers can return to the forest.
