Grants councilor files battery charge after council clash

Grants Municipal Court has charged Gary Whittington after city council member Ruben Aranda said Whittington grabbed his neck during a heated post meeting exchange. Whittington says he only placed a hand on Aranda and denies aggression. No police action yet to sign a formal citation, and a trial date may be set if he does not respond. Whittington questions motives and notes fear of a possible restraining order.

Milan board acts to clean derelict lot on Elkins Rd

Milan trustees vote 4-0 to pursue district court action against landowner Sam Davis of Absarokee for 1413 Elkins Rd. derelict property. Neighbors report weed growth, derelict buildings, trespass risks, and fear of vandalism as code enforcement contemplates lien recovery of cleanup costs. Judge limits North Mine picketing at restraining order hearing

Gallup district judge Joseph Rich upheld most of the restraining order against coal mine strikers from United Mine Workers Local 1332 at the North McKinley Mine. The order requires staying a distance from the entrance and limits picketing to 20 people, with a six foot buffer along Navajo Route 54 and the leased access road. The court urged the parties to craft a joint plan for proceeding, with further review set for Monday.

Baca Chapter to rebuild after 1999 explosion

Construction begins on replacement Baca Chapter House after a November 17 1999 propane leak caused a five o five and six month rebuild. Pat Chee Construction leads work funded by insurance and Navajo Nation Risk Management. The new 4200 square foot building will house files and equipment, with temporary modular building rented for access during transition. No injuries were reported though blast debris impacted nearby homes.

Survivors of Homicide group forms in Gallup

A new support group for those who have lost loved ones to homicide begins at 6 p.m. Monday in the Turquoise Room, 218 E. Highway 66. Facilitator Edward Candelaria, NM Medical Investigator's Office, notes homicide grief is uniquely severe and urges anyone affected to attend. meetings next occur the third Tuesday each month.
