New Cibola General Hospital Opens After Long Delays
Walter Topp says the revamped Cibola General Hospital will open July 19 after years of delays and rising costs. The old facility, built during mining booms, will be demolished for a parking lot once the new hospital begins full operation. The 50 000 square foot, 25 bed campus features birthing rooms, ICU upgrades, high tech imaging, outpatient services, a family chapel, and expanded surgical and rehabilitation facilities. An open house is scheduled July 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with renewed sterilization before the July 19 reopening.

Bike Rodeo to aid Acoma youth on diabetes awareness

Panel OKs chapter for Navajo gambling exemption
The Tohajiilee Chapter moved toward prosperity after the Economic Development Committee approved an exemption to tribal law for casino style gambling. If the Public Safety Committee backs it Monday, the Navajo Nation Council will consider the measure at its July session. The Judiciary Committee had already given its approval on June 15. The measure likely faces a presidential veto by Kelsey Begaye, who has vetoed similar proposals previously. The 6-0-1 ED C vote included an abstention by Wilford Lane. Sponsoring delegate Lawrence Platero and Vice Chairman Tom LaPade led support, with others backing the plan to bring jobs to the 1252-resident community near the west side of Abberg, contingent on a state compact with New Mexico.
