Tribal panel backs Mariano Lake grant school status
The Inter-Governmental Relations Committee supports Mariano Lake Community School in remaining a federal grant school. It rejected a joint takeover proposal by the tribal education division and the Bureau of Indian Affairs amid probes into possible fraud and misuse of funds. The school’s local operation cannot start until July 1, 2001 due to a missed Sept 30, 1999 deadline. The Education Committee had split on related grant status, and restrictions were proposed to rein in spending and improve accountability including audits, timely plans, and annual reports.
