City worker sues Grants City over hiring bias

Nova D Cornett, a Grants city employee and former fire chief, sues the city in U S District Court alleging civil rights violations and sex discrimination in the appointment of a full time fire chief. She claims she was most qualified but passed over for male rival Andrew Valencia after filing with EEOC. The suit requests a federal jury trial and follows a EEOC complaint filed more than 180 days earlier.

Navajo Nation sees three new hospital clinics rising

The Chinle IHS center expands to 75 000 square feet with an 8.1 million cost while a 4 million addition at Tsaile grows to 35 000 square feet. Fort Defiance builds a 126 million 240 000 square foot replacement housing staff. Completion slated for spring 2001 with an extra delivery road.

Fatal crash trail on I-40 near Grants New Mexico

Four people were injured and a man killed in a string of crashes along a 15 mile stretch of I-40 between Grants and Thoreau New Mexico. A moving van rollover blocked westbound lanes starting a chain reaction including a school bus rear end collision that killed 75 year old Dennis Lloyd Tucker of Arkansas. A tractor-trailer collision spilled up to 100 gallons of diesel prompting fuel cleanup. Traffic delays persisted for several hours until the road reopened.

Horse and owner clean highway with adopted litter patrol

Cimarron de Valiente, a 14 year old gelding, and his owner Sheri McWethy patrol New Mexico Route 53 west of the Continental Divide under the Adopt a Highway Litter Control Program. They collect trash and recycling, keeping two miles clean near Cimarron Rose Bed and Breakfast and promoting Earth Day year round.

Violent crime figures rise in Gallup McKinley schools

Gallup McKinley County Schools report 161 assaults and batteries this year up from 67 last year as a more standardized reporting system and increased involvement by security and police officers may explain the surge. Aggravated assaults and batteries lead with 127 cases, knives used by three students, and four using other weapons. No firearms were reported this year.
