In Philadelphia, Dec 27, Judge Kirkpatrick held buyers equally guilty with bootleggers when transportation of liquor is involved. Alfred E. Norris, Philadelphia area figure, fined $200 for conspiracy to violate prohibitions by purchasing liquor from Joels D. Kerper. Norris posted $400 bail and planned an appeal. The decision holds mere purchase under Volstead Act as evidence of conspiracy when transportation is involved.
Mrs. Mary S. Fearn widow of Ver nard E. Fearn a Waco coal operator slain on his porch three weeks ago says she believes Mrs. Margaret Heldman made a hideous mistake in shooting him under the belief he ruled her life. She doubts his alleged intimate relations and notes he did not recognize his killer as she fired.
International News Service reports Henry W. Gow a watchman was burned to death when a bandit hurled acid at the Guggenheim Brothers laboratory in New York. The assailant struck him with a bottle of acid and fled. Two other men entering with supplies were bound and gagged. one was Elmer Mayhew a 21 year old chauffeur from South Baltimore who drove the Guggenheim supply truck. The lab housed valuable chemicals worth thousands of dollars.
Five persons were killed and two injured as a Solo Line passenger train struck an automobile at a grade crossing in Oak Park suburb of Chicago. The Olson family, Halvar and Mildred Olson and two small sons, plus an unidentified elderly man, were among the victims. Henry Olson, the car’s driver, survived in critical condition with the aged man. All victims were from Chicago. Rain and darkness may have reduced the driver’s visibility.
Officers Augustine Longstreth and James Steiner recovered two cars this morning and located a third on Wednesday. A Pontiac Six owned by Harold Borland of Parnassus was found on Cascade Street, an Oldsmobile Six belonging to E. J. Dallion of Pittsburgh was found near Butler Avenue, and a Hudson coach of Glenn J. Latimer of Smithfield Street was found on Rose Avenue. The owners have been notified.
