Author Somerset Maugham aged 91 slipped into a coma Friday in Nice France. His secretary Alan Searle said he was being rushed to hospital within an hour and declined to state the illness. He had been ill for a long time and had suffered a severe influenza in March.
Prime Minister Ian Smith stated Rhodesia will not abandon its independence to resume talks with Britain. He said he is the de facto government and will study London's conditional peace moves only after receiving an official message. Smith said Gov. Gibbs has no official standing and noted sanctions will not alter the outcome.
The Pennsylvania State Education Association ends its 113th convention with Wade Wilson named president elect and set to take office in 1967. Wilson is a director and industrial arts professor, first higher education affiliate to reach the presidency, while Roy W. Brandau succeeds Henry C. Messinger as president. Delegates also modify a stance on mandated negotiations, opting to urge weighing legalization of negotiating procedures rather than seek it.
Rentz is reelected president and James W. Butler Jr. remains vice president at the reorganizational meeting. The board awarded $545 to W. J. Siebandler for lowering ceilings and $93 to D. J. Hannon & Sons for a hot water tank. It also approved $15,750 to township supervisors for the water system construction fee, $960 to W. C. Zabel Co. for sneeze guards, renewing a 1 percent wage tax with New Castle, reconditioning 90 football helmets, and allowing basketball players two meals at away games.
President Charles de Gaulle launches his runoff bid against Francois Mitterrand with a 15 minute television speech to rally support. De Gaulle led the preliminary vote but failed to reach 50 percent, while Mitterrand secured 32 percent to reach the December 19 runoff.

U S District Attorney Vernor Jansen said federal review could lead to new charges mirroring earlier Klansmen prosecutions. The case followed civil rights activity led by Dr Martin Luther King Jr and ties to the Liuzzo killing.
President Johnson moves to trim Great Society programs to fund Viet Nam war and approves a $1.7 billion plan to buy 210 FB111 heavy bombers. United Mine Workers Local 14712 approved a three year contract with Carbon Limestone Co ending a 63 day strike. The pact raises wages 6 to 10 cents immediately and adds four weeks vacation for workers with 25 years service. The local had rejected the offer on December 1, a union spokesman said.
Organized labor gives broad backing to President Johnson over Vietnam policy as AFL-CIO delegates rally support to counter critics. Vice President Humphrey and Secretary Rusk receive ovations while Meany forecasts a tougher resolution than the administration. The union aims to repeal Taft-Hartley Section 14 B, halted by Senate filibuster, and to push union shop dues repeal.
UPI reports U S Marines slogged through flooded paddies and barbed wire to overrun a Viet Cong stronghold 20 miles south of Da Nang. Fighting raged with heavy losses on both sides as bombers roared in and reports warned some Viet Cong may have slipped away toward Qui Son.
