In Emmanuel church Allentown 293 women from Northampton Carbon and Lehigh counties gathered for the tenth anniversary of the four county council of American Legion auxiliaries. The event featured speeches by officials including Mabel McAfee and Ann Slattery and included songs by local clubs and a formal luncheon. The next council meeting is planned for Stroudsburg.
C F Martin, president of the school board, spoke on The School Dollar at Eagle Hall before the Northampton County Taxpayers League. He analyzed the educational budget to January 1 1933 with total income shown as 120979 and 93330 tax- raisable. He urged economy, proper equipment, and strong teachers. H P Weisley discussed county finances, noting county taxes rose from 408000 in 1922 to 636000 in 1931 and a county payroll of 441537.26. R N Fulton outlined bills for the next legislative session.
The local Chamber of Commerce met Friday evening at the Y M C A with P S Trumbower presiding. Elected directors include Edmund Champion Harry Freeman J H Fulmer William Henry C J Knauss A G Kern Frank Martin Frank Schmidt Charles Shafer A J Sturgis H O Simons P B Trumbower and H P Weisley. J H Fulmer spoke on the outlook of taxes for the future noting efforts to reduce taxes by 1 0 to 2 mills and praising civic bodies.
Camp 445 along with Easton camps 542 407 and 193 gathered at Shafer's Hall for a district meeting. Roy Young of camp 542 installed district officers including Elwood Meyers president Herbert Edelman vice president and other posts. Attendance approved all camps attending Washington memorial services February 19. Refreshments provided by Edelman Kratz Berger and Kidd.
Cattle herds in Bushkill Plainfield Forks and Lower Mt Bethel Townships will begin tuberculin testing Monday January 23 under the area plan to eradicate bovine tuberculosis. Dr H W Turner state veterinarian says the Bureau of Animal Industry at Harrisburg cooperates with farmers. indemnity is provided. bids for veterinarian transport are due January 21.
Last Tuesday marked the 227th birthday of Benjamin Franklin, noted for electricity and the Declaration of Independence. He died in Philadelphia in 1790, with twenty thousand paying tribute. Today also marks the 127th birthday of General Robert E. Lee, Confederate commander, who died in Lexington, Virginia, in 1870.
Two of Northampton county's five insurance firms held annual meetings on Saturday electing officers for the coming year. The Citizens' Company at the Nazareth Inn named Rosenberry as president and Snyder as vice president with Metler and Ziegler as secretary and treasurer respectively. Directors include several named local figures and the group reported over 16 million dollars in insurance in force. The Farmers' Mutual Insurance Company met at Nazareth offices and elected Hess as president, Brotzman as vice president, and Mohn as secretary and treasurer, with a slate of directors led by Mohn and Hess. A dinner followed at the Nazareth Inn.
Vigilance Hose Company met Monday evening in a well attended session. Four new members were elected and four applications received. Financial reports show the company in flourishing condition. 1933 fire police: Hahn, Asher Hahn, Hock, Kemmerer, Kemmerer, Osterstock, Teel, Wambold. New badges and thanks to town Council for two new gas masks and yearly appropriation. Firemen Relief Association Nazareth reorganized for 1933 with Saeger president, Cooley secretary, Elmer Kemmerer noted ill.
Nazareth Pennsylvania School District board meets January 9 1933 electing committees for the year and reviewing the treasurer and tax collector reports. Budget balances show December 1 1932 at 32166 73 with receipts 8409 21 and total expenditures plus balance January 1 1933 at 32905 68.
Dr Julius Klein Assistant Secretary of Commerce will give a 15 minute radio talk Sunday January 22 from 7 00 to 715 pm EST from Washington via CBS Coast to coast network The talk urges study of business matters beyond big centers and highlights small town newspapers and chambers of commerce as engines of local recovery and cooperation He outlines their principles problems and future usefulness.
The Apollo Male Chorus of forty voices will perform at St John’s Reform Church during the regular service. The program includes Laudamus Protheroe, Worship of God in Nature Beethoven, Going Home Dvorak, Crusaders Protheroe, Lost Chord Sullivan, Lullaby Brahms, and March of the Men of Harlech Richards. A cordial invitation is extended to all.
At the Y M C A dining room Rotary gathered with president William Silfies presiding. Dr. W e t more of Easton introduced. Century buttons were awarded to Charles Shafer Fred Wood James Fry Harry Freeman and Howard Shimer for 200 consecutive meetings.
The St John s Lutheran congregation held its annual meeting on Wednesday January 11 at 7 45 pm led by Rev H C Snyder with council president Elwood Anangst presiding. Reports covered every department and finances showed progress despite economic conditions. Anangst and Snyder announced new council members and that installation will occur January 22.
The second term begins Thursday February 2 with six year olds eligible as beginners if vaccinated. Parents should register children at the supervising principal's office in the High School building on Belvidere Street on January 24 25 or 26 during school hours. Certificates of vaccination must be shown at registration.
The Pen Argyl club hosted a reciprocity meeting program led by Mrs. W. J. Happel as president and Mrs. Charles W. K. Shafer chairing. Performances included vocal selections by Mrs. Happel Miss Weisley and Miss Gernet, readings by Arlene Heuns and Mrs. Laura Encke, vocal solos and duets, followed by a refreshment hour.
Nazareth saw one of its lowest fire losses in years as Fire Chief Charles Stuber reported total damage about 8500 dollars for 1932. The largest loss was a house on Whitfield Street owned by Frank Williamson, estimated at 5950 dollars. A barn owned by Henry Kline caused about 2500 dollars in damage. A minor fire at Mary Audenreid's home caused no damage. One false alarm occurred at box 31 Center and Whitfield. Three out of town calls went to Bath and East Lawn. Thomas Hoffman recovered from illness and is mobile again.
Nazareth Rod and Gun Club members met at the Y M C A with Roy Kostenbader presiding. Auditors Paul Davisson and Don Detweiler reported, treasurer Earl Heyer’s report was accepted, and a general discussion addressed bass pickerel and trout sizes. The group kept bass and pickerel sizes, set trout creel at 15, and elected directors including Wotring Detweiler Kauffman Kostenbader Searles Schlegel Vogel Knecht Davis on Feb 20 booster meeting planned with lectures and refreshments. Mrs Hannah Daniel is ill.
