Military Services Held For Powers Marine

Harold Stanley Benn a United States Marine Corps Lance Corporal killed in Vietnam on September 6 was honored at Powers Church of God with full military rites. Interment followed at Powers Cemetery. Benn, born February 14, 1948 in Aberdeen Washington, enlisted August 1 1966 and served in the 3rd Battalion 3rd Marine Regiment. He is survived by his parents Mr and Mrs Gerald Benn of Powers and siblings.

Library Concludes Summer Reading Program Details

Flora M Laud Memorial Library wrapped up the Tall Timber Reading Club for 1st through 5th graders in July and August. Ten books and oral reports earned certificates presented at school by librarian Gene Mayberry. PHS announces band officers led by President John Nelson and Vice President John Van Landingham. Secretary treasurer Sigrid Mitchell, seniors Mike Kissell, juniors Mergie Humble, and others fill roles including Donnie Wise, Carol Gassmen, Julie Ames, Debbie Deitz, Danny Neal, and Dave Horton. Majorettes are Julie Ames, Gloria Hardman, Cammy Horner, Sigrid Mitchell, Judy Murray. The Dram Major is Scott Gibbs.

Local Boy Wounded by Gun Accident Near North Bend

A youth, son of Mr and Mrs L L Rynearson, was shot in the abdomen by a discharge from a nearby .22 rifle while likely handling the gun. The accident occurred about 10 45 p m Monday night. He was taken by ambulance to Keizer Hospital in North Bend and was reported in satisfactory condition by the local police department.

Kilgore Enlists in Marine Corps in 120 Day Delay Program

Marine Private Danny Ray Kilgore son of Mr and Mrs William R Kilgore of Myrtle Point has joined the United States Marine Corps for three years under the 120 day delay program He is a Myrtle Point High School graduate of June 1967 and will depart for recruit training in San Diego California on Oct 16

Marine Private Kenneth Ray Barnett son of Vic and Mrs Joe O Barnett of Myrtle Point enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on Sept 7 at Coos Bay. He graduated Myrtle Point High School in May 1966 and will depart Sept 25 for Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego California for recruit training.

The Coos Curry Electric Cooperative holds its annual meeting at Brookings Harbor High School on Saturday September 30 with registration at 9 am and business session at 10 am. Massey Daughter Sarah Parrish Rites in Myrtle Point

Sarah Parrish 75 a longtime Massey family member died September 23 in Myrtle Point. Born November 20 1891 in Broadbent she was treasurer of the local Seventh Day Adventist Church for over 20 years. Survivors include son Donald Parrish of The Dalles daughters Lila Watson Broadbent Averil Glimberg Myrtle Point sister Edna Thomas Broadbent brother Ellis Masse Broadbent seven grandchildren seven great grandchildren. Services were held September 25 at 10:00 a.m. at the Myrtle Point Chapel officiated by Elder Burton Boundry with interment at Norway Cemetery.

The town of Myrtle Point recorded its warmest day of the year on Tuesday with a high of 95 degrees as September 22 marked the final day of summer. Earlier in the season the peak reached 95.5 degrees on September 13.

MP Man Takes Repair Course

Private Lamny D Cartwright, 19, of Myrtle Point, completed a general vehicle repairman course on September 14 at the Amy Amos School in Knox Kentucky. Over eight weeks he trained in recovery and maintenance of wheeled and tracked vehicles issued to armor units.
