A reader condemns men who keep hats on while dining with wives and families. He recalls Myrtle Point and Bandon incidents, calling such behavior disrespectful and uncultured, urging hats be removed as an old tradition in dining settings.
The BPW club heard Effie Shindell recount her Europe trip with humor and a final tale about a papa squirrel asking to tell George Hall hello, plus a note on Emancipation of White House yard animals and a warning from John C Hunt on Oregon deer hunting conditions.
Mrs. Bill Downing was honored Thursday at the Myrtle Point BPW banquet as Business Woman of the Year for her service as past state BPW finance chairman and treasurer, and for being the first woman elected to Myrtle Point city council. Mayor Elvin Eads signed the BPW week proclamation as attendees from surrounding towns looked on.
Television Systems Inc announces Myrtle Point ready for full TV reception with a hill antenna for Channel Six and Maple Street cable. Downtown service to finish by October mid, citywide by year start. Hookups cost 150 dollars plus 4 60 monthly service tax, promising strong reception from Portland Eugene and NBC broadcasts.
Mrs. Ben H. Lea of Dora leaped into the east fork of the Coquille river Thursday to save her granddaughter. The act followed the biblical praise of laying down one’s life for another, with the event continued on the back page.
Curtis Wayne Struss 29 a despondent Korea veteran with shell shock killed himself at his sister Mrs. Craig Heath’s home in Myrtle Creek He served three years in Korea with the 40th Division Funeral at Schroeder chapel today at 2 p.m He was single and survived by six sisters and one brother Hank Struss of Montana including Mrs H E Hutchinson Mrs Wilfred Neal Mrs Ralph Barnes Mrs Al Armfield in San Diego Mrs Fred Mantz in Reedsport and Mrs Heath of Myrtle Creek.
Local attorneys attended the State Bar convention in Baker Oregon from September 21 to 24. Participants included Robert Belloni Jack Dunn Wallace Dement and Leo Nuttman. Mrs Belloni accompanied Robert Belloni.
Coos County officials pursue a sensational claim that a Myrtle Point revival exposed a major gambling racket. DA Pickett seeks legal grounding while subpoenas sit with Chief Tankersley as Rev Shuler and Rev Miller deny money involved, arguing the issue concerns souls.
Evangelist Phil Shuler told a Sunday crowd he was confronted by the Myrtle Point district attorney's office about his claim of a gambling racket. He accused District Attorney John Pickett of "looking at the wrong book" and said the DA is unfit if he cannot see the issue.

Richard Vines former Myrtle Point police chief pleaded guilty before Judge Dal King in circuit court to larceny of public funds and was sentenced to three years in the state penitentiary. He was taken to Salem to begin serving his sentence. Also, Wm. Ross Gill of Lakeside had his two year suspended parole revoked for a drunken driving case.
Belloni & Engelgau announce that Leo Vincent Nuttman of Stayton Oregon has joined their firm. Nuttman is a University of Oregon Law School graduate with an LLB degree and brings local Oregon legal training to the practice.
The Myrtle Point area reported a gracious response to Evangelist Phil Shuler evangelistic services held over two weeks. People walked aisles to commit to Christ showing a fine spirit of cooperation from evangelical churches and pastors. Plans for a similar meeting are to be made for 1956 with an Inter-church Fellowship set for October 10 at 7 pm in the Methodist church.
Mr. and Mrs. A. Schreeder, long-time Coos County natives, marked their anniversary with a Sunday event at their home. Residents of Myrtle Point since 1908, they contributed to city life, including Mayor Schreeder’s two terms and local affairs, with Mrs. Schreeder noted for community service and church involvement.
Waldport hosts a Saturday night football game with half time by the Waldport Shamrocketts a 20 member baton twirl group ages 6 to 17. They performed for 20 000 fans in Portland during a Rams Giants game and use sparklers when lights go out. The coast team enters with a split T offense and star runner Howard Henderson a 200 pound fullback and top ground gainer in the coast league.
The Coquille Valley Golf & Country Club Fall Tournament crowns a champ flight after a week of matches. Elite players advance to the second round, with Chet Noyes, Lou Holimon, Bob Ley, M S Deere LeRoy Sergeant, Floyd Hall, Andy Richardson, Russ Holimon, Ervin Wikberger, John Arnold and Kralicek among those teeing off in the first round.
