Ray Harris Sr had major surgery Friday at St Vincent hospital in Portland. He is reported to be recovering and should be released in about nine or ten days. Mr Harris and Mrs Harris traveled to Portland on Monday the 12th, with Mrs Harris staying with her husband.
Salem Ore Sept 16 The highway commission plans bids to improve curves and grade on Powers Highway. The project aims to complete in the fall of 1961 with future work outlined after completion.
Foster Thompeon of Gaylord spoke at the Myrtle Point Chamber dinner about Coos County as a future major beef cattle producer. He noted the first annual stock feeder beef sale at Bandon drew buyers from the Northwest, with 800 head sold and strong demand. The meeting also announced a Chamber promotion with Mitch Myers heading the retail trades committee to offer valuable shopper prizes.
The Coquille and Myrtle Point Chambers of Commerce sponsored a Myrtle Point event marking modernization work on Highway 42. About 150 people attended a 4 p.m. ribbon cutting at Hoffman Wayside Inn followed by a reception and chicken dinner at the Myrtle Hotel. Elton Schroeder presided at the ceremony.

Mr and Mrs E Harrison of Inglewood California visited Rev and Mrs Glen Montz for several days this past week.
Three young men died and a boy suffered minor injuries when a car failed to turn on Highway 43, plunged into rocks along the Coquille River. John Frank Fish and Charles Jerome Hanson were killed. Jayne Bryant and another passenger were hospitalized with critical injuries. Service for Fish followed in Coquille.
