The survey shows Myrtle Point with 0.2 percent commercial use of occupied area, 110 percent industrial use including adjacent large activity, and 18.1 percent public uses. Coquille 14.1 percent public, Reedsport 10.6, 17-city average 15.4. Street right of way totals 18 miles, with 349 percent development in right-of-way. A large aerial map will be on view in the Herald window for one week starting Wednesday the 20th.
Kenneth F. Carl of Arege and Mrs. John D. Carl recount his birth in Mor way and schooling at Arage. He studied agriculture and dairying at Oregon State, married Delores Green of Tillamook, taught FFA in McMinnville, then joined the State Department of Agriculture as assistant to the Chief of Foods and Dairies. This summer he was advanced to Chief of the Dairy and Consumer services, a top department post.
The Myrtle Point school board reviews optional fees, noting 7th and 8th graders benefit more from the fees than 4th and 5th graders. Fees fund athletic programs and activities with little or no participation by the younger students. About two hours of discussion revealed disagreements among parents, but a pledge to revisit the issue before budget time.
Myrtle Point's Richard Armstrong and Richard Gassman each scored twice as the Bobcats rout Siuslaw of Florence 50–0 at home. Daniels returned a kickoff for a score, Armstong and Gassman added major plays, and Myrtle Point outgained Siuslaw led by strong defensive stands.
County Assessor Francis Flanagan reports plausible tax increases this year despite lowered millage rates. He attributes higher taxes to increased spending and the Southwestern Oregon College budget, with Myrtle Point facing about a 16 percent rise, while Bandon rises under 2 percent and other cities show smaller gains.
The local Lions Club hosts its annual White Elephant Sale and auction Saturday starting at noon at the vacant service station beside Orchard Auto Paris. A 9 month old girl from Bridge nearly suffocated after choking on a string bean residue. Parents Myrtle Point Fire Department officers and hospital staff acted quickly to relieve the blockage and the baby was transported to the local hospital for treatment. An attending physician removed a triangular piece of metal from the throat.
Merchants advertise Stop and Shop values for a busy weekend in Durham. A $50 prize draws and openings are featured with sales by Rainbow Girls and Legion Rummage events at Masonite and Misple halls. Drawing winners missing from attendance trigger next week's draw.
The county assessor releases show Myrtle Point will face a higher tax increase than most districts, though Superintendent Armstrong notes Myrtle Point remains lowest in overall millage compared with other Coos County districts. Bandon continues at a lower levy, with all others above Myrtle Point.
