Citizens and merchants of the Myrtle Point-Coquille area donate enough funds to cover all expenses for the FFA livestock judging team's trip to Kansas City. A letter of appreciation will be sent by team members to the individual donors.
Southwestern Oregon College unveiled its 12 week Administrative Management Seminar to aid owners and managers. The program chaired by Donald Moffitt runs Tuesdays 7 15 to 10 pm at the Empire campus in room 9 beginning Sept 29 and ends with a commencement banquet. The $35 fee covers the course.
Crester junior high fields 19 eight graders and 28 seventh graders for football as the season starts with Sept 26 at Coquille. Last year Myrtie Cresters beat Marshfield 7 0 in the opener, then won five straight and posted strong offensive and defensive records. Coach Maurice Middieton says turnout is small but interest is high with seventh graders to play first followed by eighth graders.
Captain Roy D. Dayton son of Mrs Signe J. Bryant of Myrtle Point has completed school at AYS Nevada and received his commission in 1954. He is assigned to a PACAF unit at Bien Hoa Air Base Viet Nam where his squadron aids defense of the US and allies in the Pacific. His wife Darlene is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Highley Crane of Banning California.
The Bobcat Junior Varsity defeated Pacific 54 to 0 as Richard Belloni scored four touchdowns and one extra point while Rex King added two touchdowns. Coach Marv Scherpf praised the strong ground game and solid team effort.
The Murphy Construction Company of Roseburg was the successful bidder for Phase II construction at Southwestern Oregon College after sealed bids opened at a Southwestern Area Education District meeting. Base bid $483,688 plus two alternates brings total to $620,582, just under SCEVA Construction Co's $581,562 bid. Phase II calls for three more buildings at the college.
Lynn Cannon, county extension agent, urges fall phosphate fertilization for Subclover hill and bottom land pastures. Phosphate tied with aluminum and iron in Coos County soils is not plant available. both established stands and reseedings require regular fertilization to avoid weak plants and losses. Soil tests guide applications. kits available at the Coquille extension office with fertilizer program recommendations.
Clarence Ralph notes August weather and river readings. Highest temperature reached on August 4 at 7 degrees. Average low, average high, and rainfall figures are reported with August rainfall at .43 inches. River readings show 6.36 feet, the lowest since 1886.

Vandals caused over $300 in damage to a bulldozer on the Tom Guerin Ranch. The vehicle was owned by Charley Pullen of Coquille and damaged late Saturday or Sunday night.
Police report multiple thefts over the weekend. Glen Putnam’s 22 in board cabin cruiser on 6th street was stripped of fishing outfits boxes and gear except the engine. Bob Gibbs’ pickup on 7th street was looted for boots clothing tools and a billfold. A power saw was stolen from an unlocked downtown station wagon and Roy Evans owner. Clayton Mayes at 146 First St. reports a 38 20 rifle stolen from his home.
Mr Pullen reports vandalism on Guerin Land ranch including gauges removed from a bulldozer and damaged fuel systems. Grass and dirt blocked fuel tanks and lines, a mechanic was called, and a fan belt cut. Gate access troubles for riders and theft of tacks noted.
A work party is scheduled for Sunday morning Sept 20 at the Gravelford Center to patch the roof replace windows and check the heating system. A Sept 12 potluck drew many local families and underscored the need for an activity space for 4 H and Boy Scouts with cleanup by Walt Pickett Mrs Marvin Crosby and children.
Myrtle Point High School yearbook staff earned high honors as the Bobcat yearbook was judged by first class and professional newspaper writers. About 1,000 yearbooks competed in the contest.
The Forest Service sold 42.9 million board feet at Powers on Sept 8 1964 with Moore Mill and Lumber Co of Bandon the winning bidder at 1 102 805 60. Big Creek Blowdown sale had 8 entering bids and 59 oral bids with bidders including Douglas Wood Co Coos Head Timber Co Evans Products Co Georgia Pacific and others. Two blowdown sales from the Oct 12 1962 windstorm moved 181.5 million board feet to date, about 60 percent out of the woods. Etton Schroeder elected president of the Coos County Board of Trade in Coos Bay.
The Herald reports Wil fred F Neal of Myrtle Point won last week with a 96 score for Myrtle Point and 123 for Myrtle Creek, earning two free tickets to the U of O Brigham Young game as the 30 0 game ended. This week the prize offers two free tickets to the O U Idaho game on Saturday Oct 17 and invites any entrant.
The Myrtle Point Bobcats prepare to host Waldport in a Friday football game. Waldport enters 0-1 after a 46 0 loss to Train High School. This is the first meeting between the two Coast League schools.
Two classes in Clothing Construction for Myrtle Point and Powers women announced by Jack Brookins. The first of a five part sewing series at SWOC costs 12 dollars with basic construction taught on four cotton garments. Registration details via Mrs. Strassburg at 788 3277.
