The Myrtle Point High School Livestock Judging team captured first place at the Oregon State Fair defeating sixty six statewide teams. Members of the team are listed among the winners.
Andy Lancaster Verne Breuer October Frank Bartlett and Gary Warner lead their team to the top honor earning the right to attend the National Future Farmers of America Convention in Kansas City Missouri this October.
The Boyd Leibelt Alan Bartlett Lenny Meyer and Howard Porter team placed second in the state livestock judging event at the Oregon State Fair. Advisor Verlin K Hermann accompanied the group as forty seven teams competed for the $5000 premium and other awards. Individual dairy judging honors went to Andy Lancaster Vern Breuer and Boyd Leibelt with top eight finishers.
Myrtle Point and Arago residents could gain toll free telephone service as the Chamber of Commerce discussed the idea at a Tuesday meeting. A committee was appointed to research feasibility and report back. Superintendent Joe Stewart noted enrollment changes and new Early Bird classes at the High School. A safety crosswalk discussion with State Highway Dept and notes on Maple Primary and Spruce Elementary school counts were also reported.
Local pilot Tom Coffman with Dean Mason and Bill Rylander aboard a Mooney four seat plane faced a runway obstruction during a landing at Leon Iowa. The landing gear was damaged but all aboard remained unharmed. Coffman and Mason returned home by bus. plane left for repairs.
Raymond Eugene Metz, 3) of Broadbent, died Tuesday night in a Myrtle Point Coquille Highway accident. He was a passenger in a car driven by Jack Hermann of Myrtle Point. The vehicle skidded on loose gravel on a turn near Benham's Ready Mix plant, crossed into the opposite lane and was struck broadside. The crash happened at 5 15 pm as Hermann traveled east.
Cary Morris of Coquille won the fourth annual State Elks golf tournament at Coquille Valley Golf and Country Club over Labor Day weekend defeating Erv Dettman of Coquille by six down and five to go. Morris shot a three under par first round of 30 and ended four under in the second round highlighted by four straight birdies. This was Morris’s second straight State Elks title and the final featured Morris and Dettman after they eliminated George Linn and Al Hall in a Sunday six-hole match.
The High Cascades early buck season runs September 12 to 20 with good deer populations and low fire danger. Areas extend from Wapinitia Pass to the Rogue Umpqua divide, offering accessible hunting, camping, and fishing opportunities near many high mountain lakes. The Waldport Maples on September 12–20 provides coastal range hunts with mixed cover and clear cuts near Mapleton and Alsea.
Myrtle Point prepares for the November 3 election with Mayor Ross Pinkley not seeking re election. Three council seats open to new candidates as retiring councilmen John Deyton Jim Howe and Don Troxell depart. Petitions due by October with no candidates yet declared. Insurance bid from Billingsley Huggins accepted as lowest bid. Linn Insurance and Hogan Realty and Insurance also bid.
Rogue River fishing reports from Gold Beach show a red hot season with spring chinook counts over 40 000 by August 15 as anglers boost fishing pressure over the bar. Biologists note catches more than double in recent years signaling a remarkably strong run upriver.
Myrtle Point launches its 1964 grid campaign against the Myrtle Creek Vikings Friday at 8 pm on the Bobcat turf. The Bobcats arrive with five straight wins over the Vikings and a listed starting lineup includes Stidham Breuer Bartlett Grisham Poste Neal Brewster Pullen Franzen Grant Johnson. Merchants back the team with a booster page in this week's Herald and run a contest readers should join.
