Ray M Shaffar, a Powers bachelor, maintains a renowned high fidelity music den. His equipment includes a powerful short wave radio, three new speakers, 100000 feet of recording tape, and a 20 by 36 foot workshop for building hi fi cabinets. He hosts radio engineers and orchestra leaders from the Northwest and San Francisco, calling his setup one of Powers show places.

Death in the Family

A tribute recalling Mabs Buergler of a large St Louis family who died in August after a long life with five sisters and a brother. The narrator, from Chicago, arrived late but cherishes memories of her laughing and shared moments. Continued on Page 7.

Famous 91st Division to Hold 38th Reunion in Seattle

The 38th annual reunion of the 91st Wild West Division will be in Seattle Washington on September 29 at the Seattle Chamber of Commerce 215 Columbia Street. Veterans from World War I and World War II are urged to contact Archie Walker secretary of the 1st Division Association in Seattle for details. Doug McKay, a World War I veteran who served in France, is expected as an honored guest.

Powers Lions Invite Bergey as Guest Speaker

Powers Lions Club invites D O Bergey of Pacific Power and Light Co to speak at the next regular meeting combined with the Powers Chamber of Commerce. The talk is expected to cover the Eden Ridge dam on the Coquille. The club reports a successful trap shoot on August 26 raising about $10,000.

Coos County 4-Hers Win Herdsmanship Cup at State Fair

Coos county 4 H ers won the Herdsmanship trophy for the third time at the State Fair with a score of 396. A 12 animal team led by Woodrow Robison of Arago traveled the Myrtle Point group included Joanne Davenport and others. Sponsors included Rudy s Texaco Service Barklow Realty and Arago Cheese Company. Other Coos county winners included a live stock judging team led by Paul Weeks Sam Roderick and Gene Mast.

Man Killed Directing Traffic After Four-Car Crash on Highway 42

William Morrison Hall, 26, of Myrtle Point, directing traffic after a four-car collision on Highway 42 near Hoffman Wayside, was killed when a car driven by Frederick Tams struck him. Byron Nordstrom and Claude Finley were also involved. Hall died at Mast hospital. Survived by wife Marjorie, three children, and his Virginia-born father William Hall. Funeral held at Schroeder Chapel with burial at Norway Cemetery.

Morse to Speak at McKinley Grange Hall This Saturday

Friday Trap Shoots Postponed By Myrtle Point Club

The Myrtle Point Sportsmen's club has discontinued Friday evening shoots until after the Merchandise Trap Shoot on Sunday September 23. The September 23 shoot begins at 10 am with ammunition and food available at the clubhouse.

Rotarians to Welcome District Gov Thursday Noon

Ambrose Brownell of Milwaukee Oregon, Governor of District No 154 Rotary International, will visit Myrtle Point Rotary on September 13. He will address the club and confer with President J Mitch Myers Secretary Rev Leon Miller and committee chairmen on administration and service activities. District 154 includes 53 clubs in Oregon and Southern Washington with about 3500 members. Continued on back page.

Dr Eric Frykenberg, a veteran missionary and conference speaker, will lect at Myrtle Point Baptist church Friday Sept 14 at 7 30 p m. He will also headline the Baptist Men's Fellowship at Emmanuel Baptist in Coquille Saturday at 7 p m followed by a pot luck. He returns Sunday at 7 30 p m for a final Myrtle Point service.

Six students from the Myrtle Point area are admitted to Oregon State College for the 1956 57 year. Pacific Power Begins Eden Ridge Coal Exploration

Pacific Power and Light has started exploration of Eden Ridge coal deposits in Coos County as part of a broader study for a proposed hydroelectric and steam electric facility on the Coquille River. A core drilling rig is active with a second moving in to speed testing. The project envisions about 167000 kilowatts total capacity and coal plant potential of 100000 kilowatts, with permits filed to the Hydroelectric Commission and Federal Power Commission for preliminary study.
