In Coos County 186 eligible 4-H youth may enter dairy and related projects for premiums. The program covers cages, forestry, health, bird study, dairy and vocational agriculture with awards for demonstration, work, livestock judging, farm shop exhibits and machine work.
Coos and Curry county sheep men report Coos Romney fleeces winning honors at a Denver show. The Coos Romney wool is praised for its extra heavy coarse fiber and is noted as unmatched in the United States.
The opening race of the 33rd Annual Coosa County Fair drew 25 late entries led by Goof and Glow Away. About 100 horses and numerous jockeys from Northwest and Canada arrived as Fire races prize money rises, with Earl Harrill as racing secretary and E. W. Greer as starter.
Coos County beef and dairy division requires all animals over all months old to come from tested herds with registration papers for exhibition. The State Fair display praises the Coos county exhibit prepared by Mr and Mrs George Hampton of Arago who oversee the section at Salem. George K E Burr of Coquille attended the opening program and called the exhibit excellent.
Gov Earl Snell appoints an eight member special committee to study log transportation on Oregon roads and highways. The group will review related laws and submit a report before the 1947 legislative session to guide policy.
A fragmentary rustic piece recalls a social gathering at Mingus Park with friends from home. A potluck lunch was shared at noon and attendees included Mr Train and Mrs Barna, who were honored guests at a casual Sunday theme.
Henry A. Schroeder of Myrtle Point attended a meeting of youth camp executives at McKinley youth camp last week. Nineteen people joined a dinner arranged by Mrs Richard Hill and Mrs C P McNab of Coos Bay. Reports show attendance by various groups and that the camp, run this season by Coos County chambers of commerce, set a record for one camp with Baptist groups contributing eight dollars.
Merle Greege, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Baldwin of Fairview, is recovering at Stark hospital Coquille after a small calibre rifle discharged accidentally last week. The bullet pierced the abdomen but did not injure vital organs.
Candidacy for city recorder and treasurer must be filed at least ten days before the November 6 ballot. Electors will vote on recorder, treasurer and men. Holdover councilmen are Elton Schroeder Robert Powerls and Melvin Eads. Terms expiring include P. C. Roper Tom Guerin and M. Myers. Present city recorder is A. M. Parrish treasurer Mills and water Jesse D.
School leaders renewed a donation appeal to citizens to provide fresh or canned fruits and produce for a low cost luncheon for students. Students harvested apples and peaches donated by Rady Rochek of Norway E A Holland of Lee, with corn and apples also donated. The produce was canned at the union cannery in Myrtle Point. Students picking fruit included Jimmy Churchill Dick Gil Frank Hutchinson Earl Waterman and Raymond Kane.
The Coos County Teachers Association holds its annual meeting September 14 at 10 a.m. in the Junior High auditorium Myrtle Point. State Superintendent Rex Petman and Dennis McGuire will speak. About 150 teachers are expected with officer elections and committee reports. After the session teachers will attend the Coos County Fair. George Hoffman of Myrtle Point visited Coos Bay Saturday.
A 200-pound black bear blamed for killing over 40 sheep in Gaylord was hunted by L. W. Land and neighbor Frank Fish for two months. Verne Gray from Coos Bay brought in dogs to locate the den. The bear was trapped after days of effort and killed by a well placed shot.
Two VanLeuven brothers led Bear Creek Parkersburg Ceskery club in a cooking demonstration at the state fair, earning top honors in bread making. Others from Coos county won ribbons for vegetable exhibits, home making, and forestry. County Agent Noel Sommer attended the Salem fair events.
Western Condensing Co. in Coquille pays farmers $8000 monthly from whey that would otherwise be wasted. The firm converts whey into milk sugar and penicillin culture for sale. The operation employs up to 25 workers and also makes poultry and dairy feeds from whey.
Local anglers flocked to Parkerburg after rumors of stripers in the Coquille River. A weekend boat rental led to a lively, though brief, day of fishing with several medium size stripers reported at the cannery dock.
E. C Roberts reports the sale of the A. W. Thompson place on Gravelford road about a mile east of town to Mr and Mrs El Ibert BR Claver.
Crowds at the fair enjoy the Miller troupe performing daring stunts on a solid platform. The act features new death-defying specialists and audience applause worldwide. A highlight is hand climbing 95 feet in the air on an unbraced ladder.
The S O sign hung at the union high school cannery as over 50 women brought produce to can. The day ranked among the heaviest for the project and the cannery will stay closed Friday for the fair. Mrs. George Hoffman leads operations and predicts 1946 hours will exceed all prior seasons with berries chicken meat and fish among the items canned.
Twelve thousand cutthroat trout averaging two and three quarters inches were released in Cees and County streams. Foreman Whaltis Baker of the Ferry creek state hatchery near Banden said the fish went into tributaries of Pieres creek and lake and then Kik rivers in Curry county. About 80 thousand fingerlings will remain for release next spring as part of the regular thinning program to prepare waters for winter.
The ragged shoulder along the Coquille-Ceen Bay highway between the Kreme plant and Coalede was widened in a surprise improvement. Part of a cement load spilled on the curve, smashing sacks and coating the shoulder, with bystanders hastily collecting material. The cement is expected to set into a better concrete shoulder after the first rain.
Officials report cement for the new city pump building, needed to house water supply pumps and equipment, will arrive next week. The project, requiring 1900 sacks, had fears of delay but progress continues alongside the erecting structure.
Mrs. A M Christensen suffered a broken shoulder and eye cut after her horse slipped on a Tuesday afternoon while riding with Mrs. Liles Ellis and Mrs. Verona Brewster. She also broke her glasses in the fall and incurred minor brushes.
