Enrollment at Myrtle Point schools reached historic levels. junior high and grade school opened with 412 students, high school 220, far exceeding previous records. Principal figures show 159 juniors and 253 in the grade school, with all buildings near capacity as the district begins the term.
Harry O Chapman district manager of West Coast Telephone announces wage increases from 25 to 66 percent for company employees. Increased paychecks were distributed Sept 1 with retroactive effect to June 24. Back wages were paid from the Everett Washington headquarters.
EC Roberts, a Myrtle Point realtor, says he sold only his legal business to Mr Frame of Eugene and will continue to run his real estate and expand his insurance business in Myrtle Point from the same offices. He explains the move aims to devote more time to real estate and speed up legal work with Mr Frame handling the new legal office in the Bower building.
A license examiner will be at Myrtle Point city hall from 10 am to 4 pm on Thursday September 12. The person in charge of licenses and permits to drive may contact the examiner on that date.
Mayor J D Clinton urges Myrtle Point businesses to close from 1 pm to 4 pm during the Coos County Fair dates September 12 13 14 to help attract visitors and honor the county fair designation except for eating establishments.
Work began Tuesday on a city pump house awarded to H Perriott of Coquille. The building will be 11 16 feet and will house pumps for 800 wallons per minute. Cement for the floor starts today with some delay from cement shortages. 1900 bricks are needed, 600 delivered.
Elgin residents joined Natal Day events in North Bend last Friday. Participants included Elton Schroeder, Henry Rosslow, E O Sempert, Ralph Kring, Della Belloni, Robert Powrie, Frank Furman, Charles Wootridge, Howard Whitaker, Ralph Whitaker, Claire Lehmanowsky, and John Arnold. Elgin's portion featured a pantomime of three songs including Among My Souvenirs. Ray Nuegart of Myrtle Point performed as guest singer. Deren Mortician Ray A Schroeder and Sons, with Mrs. Van Doren, returned from a Seattle vacation event.
Crowds estimated in the high hundreds welcomed Gray's to Myrtle Point on Friday for the formal store opening. Flowers decorated the shop as gifts to owner Pete Gray from Henry A. Schroeder & Sons and others. Myrtle Point manager J L Tobey, clerks Miss Phyllis Roush and J G Ramey, and district Marshall-Wells official John Jessen attended. KOOS radio aired from the store with Leonard Eppling, and Gray praised local hospitality while noting showroom delays and soon arriving fixtures and windows.
After ten years the Myrtle Point storefront renamed Myrtle Lane Inn near Myrtle Lane highway from Coquille to Powers Junction will open for the Coos County fair. The refurbished inn features leather booths air conditioning a hardwood dance floor and new kitchen gear plus a self service refrigerated case for ice cream frozen fruit and specialties. A modern barbecue and rest rooms will be completed soon.
Mina Lote Payne of San Francisco arrives in the city on Saturday evening to join Union High School as a new teacher and will reside at the T 1G Sumerlin apartments.
Mingus park Coos Bay is hosting Mr Train age claims about being the oldest Dakotan attendee. A birth certificate search is under way though officials doubt it will prove anything. Train notes he was 21 at the 1876 Little Big Horn massacre and is now 91.
Myrtle Point High home economics class canned peaches for the school cafeteria at the local cannery under Miss Ethel Wooley supervision. Fruits were donated by Mrs. Ray Epperson. Girls listed include Pauline Moria Jennie Zian Marlene Train Donna Krewson Marvene Christensen Joyce Compton Anne Davenport Gloria LaFlamme Geraldine Huntley Arlene Evans. Officials seek more vegetables and fruit donations to maintain hot nourishing lunches without raising prices.
The first school health conference and immunization clinic will be held in Powers this fall. County health officer Dr Eleanor Gutman announced the plan with Powers school nurse Mrs Donald Burch and first grade teacher Mrs Irene McMillion. Powers was the first to request such service.
Ten small parcels of real estate sold by the county court this week, the largest bringing 750 dollars. Most land sold lies in the Coos Bay and North Bend areas.
The ashes of Jessie Willard Sutton a retired Portland railroad engineer were brought to Myrtle Point for interment in the Broadbent area by his niece Mrs Ralph Gibbs. Sutton died in Portland July 29 and had asked that his ashes be sent to his niece for burial near Broadbent. He was planning a visit to see Mrs Gibbs when he was stricken.
Col. Charles Blinkensop and his wife visited Rev. and Mrs. W A Briggs at their home last week. The couple traveled to Myrtle Point to see Rev Briggs during a stay with Mr. and Mrs. Harold Withnell in Coquille. Blinkensop serves as division chaplain of the 400th division and he and Briggs met in Australia during the war.
Forty attended a Fellowship dinner at the Christian church as plans were made for a community teachers reception. The gathering will be held at the Methodist church to honor local teachers and foster a get-together. Pvt Harrison Floyd, son of Mr and Mrs Francis Floyd, is stationed on guard duty at the Alameda naval base in California.
Ralph Kring of Myrtle Point has been named district chairman for the 1946 Oregon Chest Drive. H. C. Chapman, Coos County chair man, announced the appointment and said Kring will meet with community leaders to map plans. Coos County quota drops from 9155 to 6895.
The post office bank and business houses closed Monday for Labor Day with county offices closed in Coquille. Many Myrtle Point residents spent the long weekend picnicking in the mountains or resting on the beach.
Inquiries flood the Herald Press window as two women ask about lost billfolds and a classified advertisement offers a reward and contains licenses and cash. No claimants yet, leaving residents to wonder who misplaced the items.
Members of the fair committee race to finish preparations for the Myrtle fair week. The event will showcase horse racing, exhibits, and a robust auditorium program with Eddie Burke Attractions headlining acts including the Millers and the Montaynes. Browning Bros. Carnival returns for the 90th year with new attractions and many concessions. A call goes out for out of town visitors needing lodging, with Norwood Browne at Myrtle Hotel as contact.
The town born as Meyersville Ott and renamed Myrtle Point owes its fame not to industry but to the surrounding myrtlewood trees.
