Roush resigned as treasurer of the Coos County Fair Association at a special meeting in Myrtle Hotel. He cited business reasons and notes that he and Mrs. Roush have considered the move for some time after 14 years of service. The position will be filled at the October stockholders meeting.
Miss Julie Duke, Myrtle Point High School Commerce Dept instructor, returned from a Pacific University led study tour of South America. The thirteen educators visited Mexico City Panama Lima Cuzco Machu Picchu Santiago Buenos Aires Rio de Janeiro Brasilia and Los Angeles before returning to Portland on August 15.
About 174 attended the 63rd Natal Day celebration of the Order of the Eastern Star at Powers High School on Saturday August 29 honoring founder Robert Morris. The event featured a noon meal by Chaparral Rebekah Lodge and a formal meeting led by President Mrs Robert Sheedy with Grand Chapter of Oregon officers present.
School doors opened Monday with 1 080 elementary pupils and 437 at Myrtle Point High School for a total of 1517 in the area. Class counts at the high school include Freshmen 108 Sophomores 106 Juniors 118 and Seniors 104. Community drive details follow with local and county goals and beneficiary agencies.
Earl Murray died Monday morning at two o'clock stated by the report from Schroeder's Chapel. Rev John Wood officiated the burial will be at Myrtle Crest Memorial Gardens along the Myrtle Point Coquille highway. Murray born in Yamhill County March 18 1900 lived in Myrtle Point last eighteen months formerly McMinnville Salem area. Survivors: widow Neva son Elvin three daughters Mrs Doroth Montez Kingman Arizona Mrs McMinnville two others 12 grandchildren four great grandchildren. He married June 1 1964 by Neva Mae McBee of Bringfield Coquille. Police report unable to locate wife. A blaze gutted a three room house at 816 6th St killing Robert Porter and his wife Marilyn Porter. Fire officials suspect an overheated oil stove started the fire. Neighbors attempted rescue but flames prevented entry. Funeral services set for Friday in McMinnville with a double service in Schroeder’s Chapel.
