Lr Council Begins Residential Area Structure

City manager Ben Nichols received a letter from the Coos road and Gravelford Road section noting road surfacing completed with a request the city assume maintenance. Council expressed concern about Reedsford Road flooding and Gravelford slides in winter and tabled action pending weather and further talks with commissioners.

County plans Maple Street upgrade with city or county crews

The county signals future Maple Street improvements from hilltop to cemetery east boundary. The project may be done by county crews or county reimbursement to city crews. City upkeep has occurred in the past, but this year shows little progress.

Signal School Course Completed By Local Man

Private Ronald E Van Vinck, 21, of Myrtle Point, finished a 21 week field radio repair course at the Army Southeastern Signal School in Ft Gordon Georgia on Sept 1. The training covered electrical fundamentals and servicing radio transmitters and receivers along with operation of testing equipment including tube testers signal generators and frequency meters.

Starting Sunday Sept 3 masses at Sts Ann and Michael in Coquille shift to 1000 am with a second service at 800 am and 1030 am. Religious instruction for grades is on Tuesdays with two sisters teaching younger students and Father Fleming guiding high schoolers.

Local Appraisers Complete Special Training At OSU

More than 200 county appraisers from Oregon completed the 12th annual Oregon Appraisal Short Course at Oregon State University. The two day program, co sponsored by the university and the State Tax Commission, aimed to improve accuracy and uniformity in real property valuation for tax purposes with emphasis on residential and commercial appraisals. Dettman Wins State Elks Golf Championship at Coquille

Dettman defeats Milt Roth 6 and 4 to claim the State Elks Golf title at Coquille Valley Golf and Country Club over Labor Day weekend. Last year’s champion Dr J N Matechetts shot a hole in one on the 10th day earlier and won first in the first flight. Sixty plus Elk golfers competed across eight flights with Don Houston, Tony Forbes, Bill Kistner and others taking top honors in their divisions.
