As MPHS readies for opening day nearly 20008 new volumes arrive for student use. The library houses reference works and research pleasure reading. study halls will take place outside the library.
The Planning Commission studies a special residential zone for mobile homes as permanent residences. Affected residents would follow subdivision, building, sanitary, electrical, and heating codes and face typical assessments. Citizens are invited to share views on mobile home site proposals in Myrtle Point.
High School junior Humble, daughter of Mr and Mrs Mike Deaiels, will leave with plans to study journalism at Linfield College. She has covered sports for the Myrtle Point Herald for the past two years and will pursue a journalism major.
Myrtle Point High School readies for Tuesday opening with about 500 students, 136 freshmen and 139 sophomores among others. Eight new teachers join 27 staff as summer renovations create new offices and a humanities library.
Suzanne Monica Coffey of Myrtle Creek was treated for a back injury after a two car collision on Highway 42 in Myrtle Point. Driving a 1962 Bel Air Chevrolet, Coffey attempted to pass a fuel truck driven by Dennis Bouy of Coquille. Both vehicles headed north. Coffey lost control on loose gravel and crashed through a cement wall by Shorty's Saddle Shop.
Word of her death reaches from Klamath Falls where Mrs May James Willer born July 1916 in Vale Oregon lived most of adulthood. Survived by husband Ernie Miller son Leon grandsons Russell and Richard mother Mrs Ben James of Springfield five sisters and one brother. Services set for Saturday at 1000 am in Springfield.
Early Friday around 130 am vandals damaged the Arage district. A fire near Bill Sinko’s garage was put out before total destruction. An old Hogan property storage burned, destroying the structure and about 1200 bales of hay.
Ella Strange 91 longtime Coos County resident died Tuesday in Coquille. Born June 16 1976 in Powers she was widow of Zenas Strange and active in First Christian Church Mamie Rebekah Lodge and Yomen so Chastan Temperance Union. Survivors include daughter Zelma Brady and sister JH McCloskey. Memorials to American Cancer Society. Police investigate road sign and truck vandalism in area.
Laura Della Hampton infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Floyd Hampton died August 27 in Coos Bay after birth at Must Hospital August 24 She is survived by a twin sister Lana and family members Graveside services were held August 28 at the Norway Cemetery with Rev Harold Backlund officiating Services were directed by Myrtle Point Funeral Home Thena Warner a McMinnville resident since 1946 died August 25 at 91 She is survived by son Lloyd of Lakeview daughter Mrs Dorothy Druliner of McMinnville brother Clarence Parry of Camas Washington Services held August 29 at the Norway Cemetery under the direction of the local funeral home and Scott's Funeral Home in McMinnville Rev Fred Bumer officiated
Two youths found a gold wedding ring and brought it to the Herald office for owners to claim. The initials on the ring identify Ernest Clausen, who wishes to thank the finders and asks them to contact him at 572-5736 or visit 506 Cathcart in Myrtle Point.

Patrick Hunt found not guilty of disorderly conduct. Bill Roush $50 for disorderly conduct. Ronald Thompson $1500 stop sign violation, payment suspended. Richard Mevis $2500 for minor intoxication. Dennis Buckles $50 for disorderly conduct. Raymond Summerfield $1500 for stop sign violation. James Graved $15 for wrong lane usage. Ralph Moll $2500 for disorderly conduct. Scotty Shorb $25 for disorderly conduct. David Gupton $25 for liquor handling offense. Mildren Northup $15 for failure to dim lights.
Myrtle Crest announces a new student insurance plan for the coming year after the prior athletic insurer went into debt. Seventh and eighth grade football players will use the high school program insurance at 825 dollars, with football shoe rental at 4 dollars and mouthpieces at 1.25 dollars. Physical exams scheduled for Aug 31 at 5 p.m. at Myrtle Point Medical Center. Regular student insurance costs 3 dollars with optional 12 dollar 24 hour coverage. Cafeteria meal tickets set at 2.50 for ten meals or 25 cents per meal for younger grades. seventh and eighth graders pay 3 dollars for a 30 meal ticket. Student body and activity fees are listed by grade, with overall fees supporting assemblies and activities.
