A reader recounts a Portland drive counting cars and foreign plates. Over T1 miles the narrator met 951 cars in the opposite direction, with 18 between New and Roseburg not in the same flow. California plates were most common among foreign cars in Highway 42 delays between Weston and Myrtle Point.
Boxing fans in Portland witnessed Harry Kid Matthews display flawed timing against Basora of New York, with promoters accusing Matthews manager Jack Hurley of arranging risky opponents. Rumors link Kahut as a dangerous fight for Matthews, while Kahut’s recent wins raise stakes for a Portland bout.
Elton Schroeder of Henry A Schr oeder & Sons in Myrtle Point was honored as Associate Grand Patron of the Grand Chapter of Oregon Eastern Star at a gala reception in the new school auditorium. State and local dignitaries joined friends and Eastern Star members for the event highlighting Elton's achievement and a community celebration. The school gym was praised as a fine community center. A large Southern Oregon event honored Elton Schroeder with an elaborate reception hosted by State, Coos County and Local C E S. The program featured drills and pantomime about Elton's life, with remarks from Mrs Paul Robinson and local officers. Family members were introduced and a flag ceremony closed with The Star Spangled Banner.
Oregon bred Gay Roost owned by A. L. Powrie of Myrtle Point won the inaugural handicap at the Oregon State Fair. The 8 year old paid 7 to 1 as the day opened seven races and a total betting pool of 78 923 dollars marked a strong start to the fair. Time for the 6 Furlong race was 1 22 with Armstong s Gay Reest finishing first and Quintela 812 30 in the common pool.
Superintendent G B Goddard reports Myrtle Point High School opened with 277 students, a 5 percent increase from last year. First day registrants split 87 girls and 187 boys with the freshman class leading at 92, sophomores 83, juniors 56, seniors 46 as the year begins.
Inter-church Fellowship will be held in the Methodist church basement on Monday evening at 7 o clock. The Assembly of God church will be in charge. All are welcome to attend.
Robert Weed and Geo Barton, sons of local families, completed a 28 day Oregon Trail Council Explorers trek to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. The Eugene youths flew there and back with 11 other Oregon Scouts, learning steer riding horsemanship bridge building trout fishing archery and more. The group recounted thrilling moments including a 300 foot four second plane drop and an overheated landing near Victorville California.
In Coos county the McCloskey grove at Norway hosted the annual joint nisble of members and friends from McCloskey Grove Odd Fellows Rebekahs for a potluck picnic. Jeffres of Myrtle Point lodge chaired the entertainment committee with games including softball and horseshoes before sunset.
Reserved football tickets for the Bobcats season and the opening game with the Coos Bay Pirates will go on sale at the high school this Thursday evening from 7 to 9. Athletic director Curt Beckham and student body president Bill Brooks will assist buyers. Dale Bunnell says the team is shaping up for Friday rep. 14 home opener.
The Myrtle Point Saddle Club invites Southern Oregon cowboys from Medford Grants Pass Myrtle Creek Chilequin and Warm Springs to compete in a two day amateur rodeo. Events include ladies riding wild milking and steer riding with various entry fees. Rides race and team events set for Saturday at 7 30 p m and Sunday at 1 00 p m with a dance in the Oaks Pavilion Saturday night. Committee members George King Wayne Watson and W A Ann Roush oversee the event.
Myrtle Point American Legion posts announce delegates for the Seaside convention September 11 to 16. Ritch Francis Henry Rowell T A Lemmers and Bill Downing are named as the host delegation reflecting veterans and family programs for sessions expected to attract thousands. details outline hosting duties and commemorative activities.
