On upper Gixes river during a heavy downpour a lone raccoon cried above the storm while seeking shelter. The narrator notes the animal’s first rain, its timid flight, and the mink that later retrieved a twenty inch trout from the stream before disappearing into brush.
Rotary District Governor Mr Ball arrived in Myrtle Point on Wednesday. He spoke to the Rotary Club board at the Gordon MacKerrow home and offered numerous suggestions for projects and activities. Directors present included MacKerrow, Ball, Billingsley, Roush, Irish, Bert Pearson, ay Rods, Wallace Dement, and Very Sandy.
A playful mix up between Myrtle Point and Powers BPW clubs led to back to back picnics. Myrtle Point women attended the wrong party, held their own feast while the Powers group dined separately, despite uneven supplies. A new resident, a full grown rooster, appeared last Friday under odd circumstances.
Ralph Whitaker reports at the Lions Club gathering that the Boy Scouts lack a master after George’s resignation and urge securing a competent leader. Prizes are awarded before the banquet with recipients listed and entertainment included.
State police take charge after Billy's Place tavern in Powers was broken into Sunday night between 11 30 and early Monday and a safe containing about 3000 dollars was stolen. No clues to the robbers were found and authorities said nothing new had been uncovered.
Kenneth Haughton, son of Mr. and Mrs. H A Haughton of Lebanon and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. A R Davenport of Myrtle Point, attended the signing of the Japanese peace treaty in San Francisco per Davenport family word. Meanwhile Bobcats star John Heeren collided with a player during a photo setup and tumbled, later joking about Pirates and Bobcats. Bert Pearson removed a sewer stoppage near the park discovering a missing water meter and hopes to catch the meter thief.
Mrs James McWilliams of Myrtle Point and her sister Mrs A Hood of Canada returned from a four month trip in Scotland and England. They visited family members and described conditions as good though meat was scarce and prices similar to America. They did not comment on reactions to the labor government.
Rural high students living at least 44 miles from the bus line or school building may receive mileage in lieu of transportation. Parents must have the student listed by the principal on the monthly report with mileage, then reimbursed 5 cents per mile both ways by the non high school board. A student must complete the Now High Information Blank and submit it to the principal to qualify.
The Women’s Christian Temperance Union will meet Friday at 2 00 p m at the home of Mrs Louise Harris.
Planning Commission to assist council with street work from Maple to Harris. Chamber of Commerce forms street improvement committee led by Ed Seanee with A Dopersinki. cost details discussed. Mayor Myers and Attorney Dunn comment on council support. report continued on Page Four.
The Myrtle Point PTA will run a morning kindergarten from October 1 with daily sessions 10 to 12 led by Mrs. Oakes. The school board provides space, lighting, water and heat. the Junior Woman's Club lends equipment. a small monthly fee covers supplies and milk.
Cowboys from the west competed at the Myrtle Point Saddle Club rodeo over the weekend. About 40 riders entered grand entries Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. R H McCall supplied stock for events including steer, bull, and calf roping plus horses for the show. Youth riders received prizes such as a bridle for Larry Frederickson who won best ride in a boys contest.
The Bobcats bring a quick, skilled lineup led by Ross Pinkley at left half and crew like Jerry Deven Captain Al Cunningham Dae Haberly and Wayne Harry. The squad emphasizes speed and experience with eight honor students on the first eleven.
Sportsmen organize a public work party to construct a floating boat dock near Arago with a crane for launching boats and returning them to trailers. Cooperating with Coos Bay Lumber Co and led by Mr Strong the project aims to endure floods. Volunteers urged to keep Sept 23 in mind and help on Sunday.
