Pleasant Point sends ten pupils to Myrtle Point as district arrays new grade and junior high classes. Mrs Abel leads grade students while athletics gain early focus with basketball prep despite a year end plan. Teachers praise start and the Myrtle Greenhouse bouquets noted.
Reverend C C Hulet writes from the East about the Graf Zeppelin world flight passing Chicago and Johnnie Roberts, Myrtle Point pioneer, moving to Kansas to live with relatives for life after months of illness. He left in 1888 as a vigorous youth. sisters had not seen him since. They rested in Salt Lake City on the way home, and Miss Evelyn Glulet accompanied them toward New Jersey for a Student Volunteer convention as the Oregon delegate.
Lions clubs from Fallen Coquille and Myrtle Point plan entertainment for the county fair between races Thursday afternoon. Committees meet in Coquille to finalize tug of war rally races or similar acts. Fair board expects a large crowd and supports a busy program. A Crescent City trip by fair officials was reported last Friday.
John Lane and family returned home after a May departure that carried them through 82 states and over 17000 miles. They traveled from California across the southern United States to New York with stops at San Antonio, New Orleans and Washington. Lane praises regional feats noting Cleveland and Detroit as marvels of the age.
Miss Aileen Barker recently returned from Eugene after a summer post session trip from the University of Oregon. On Victoria dock she saw the Empress of Asia passengers Mrs Belle Whitaker and daughter Helen bound for China. Five Coos County students joined the trip including Elizes Barker Mary Robertson Saima Lindros Pauline Chase and James Mullins.
A Studebaker roadster driven by Finney struck the bank after being crowded on a curve near the Rang ers station. Finney suffered three broken ribs and his car was badly damaged. In a separate Roosevelt highway collision near Lansgiols an oil truck and a car collided, oil flowed, no injuries occurred, and both vehicles suffered damage with a tipped truck and a smashed cab.
ASSIST COUNTY AGENT Albert Parker Wertmen and arrive September 9 to work with County Agent Hale for two to three months. He is a Kansas State Agricultural College dairy specialist and former Senith Hughes teacher. Wertman will focus on 4H club work, train stock judging teams for the county fair, with top team earning a state fair trip and second place earning a Pacific International trip, and assist with county booth and 4H exhibits at the state fair.
Lawson A Lawhorn longtime settler born May 12 1808 in Virginia died about 8 30 pm Tuesday at Mast Wilson hospital after weeks of illness. He came west with Judge Cobe’s father arriving first in Jacksonville Oregon, then Coos County in 1871 and homesteaded there. He married Louise Norris in 1877 and left four children Walter Hugh Ratlife and Mabel with grandchildren and living kin. Burial followed at Palmview farm beside his wife after services at Coquille chapel.
Myrtle Point resident David James Mitchell died at a Salem hospital last Tuesday. Funeral and burial were held in Salem Thursday with a First Baptist minister officiating, burial at Odd Fellows cemetery. Mitchell and his son J O Farmer and Mrs. Farmer traveled to Salem but arrived after his death. Fred Jolly of Langlois visited Myrtle Point friends Tuesday.
Myrtle Point officials discussed reducing pool halls to one per 1600 residents based on the federal census, with action deferred. An ordinance equalizing concrete walk assessments passed, and the council planned two major ordinances on fire limits and pool halls for the next meeting. The request for woman police at the county fair was tabled, library board member changes noted, and local fishing humor noted with William Lundy’s latest catchless trip.
The Presbytery of Southwestern Oregon gathered at the Myrtle Point Presbyterian church with twenty five ministers and elders present. It is a union of Coos Bay Presbytery and Southern Oregon and covers Coos Curry Douglas Josephine Klamath and Jackson counties. The gathering featured a sermon by moderator Dr J B Snyder and an evening address by Rev Drury T Haight with communion to close the meeting. Visiting pastors were hosted in members homes and Ladies Aid provided meals.
Natal day observations by Eastern Star chapters were held at North Bend with a 226 dinner at Sunset Bay inn. An afternoon business session followed by evening entertainments by county chapters and refreshments by the Presbyterian ladies closed the event. Attendees from Elgin Chapter No 3 included Mr and Mrs Ralph Kring and many others.
Reports say the Oregon hunting season starts the 15th bringing many out of state hunters. Coastal counties Coos and Curry note strong deer sightings and lodge reservations exceed past years. This year allows one mule deer and one blacktail or two blacktails. local mule deer are scarce while eastern Oregon holds abundant mule deer hunting potential.
A. D. Pierce of Coos Bay and a Hayes driver collided while attempting to pass on King ereak bridge on the Roseburg highway. Pierce’s Chevrolet was badly damaged but both occupants escaped. Pierce, at Kaestside, assumed responsibility and will pay all damages to the other car. Auto Park garage wrecker picked them up.
Mr and Mrs Geo Hamilton and daughters Velma and Kathryn returned home after a vacation spanning over two thousand miles through Oregon Washington and the Puget Sound region. They crossed McKenzie pass ferried the Columbia at Arlington visited Yakima valley and continued to Seattle Tacoma Olympia Portland and back. Prosperity and bumper crops mark the Northwest with pears worth 80 to 96 dollars a ton and grain stands at a record, though August brings rough roads.
The Herald warns subscribers to ignore messages from the American Collection Agency of San Francisco. A copying error caused the agency to bill people for debts they do not owe, despite prior instructions to halt and await a revised list. The publisher urges readers not to pay or respond to those notices.
Mr and Mrs E C Barker and party with Elbert Schroeder and others traveled Sunday along the Pacific highway stopping at Grants Pass Oregon Caves Crescent City and Lind home campgrounds overnight. They visited Crescent City county fair then returned with stops and visits planned in Medford and Jacksonville.
The Myrtle Point Herald notes many homes still needed as construction nears completion. Mr McCarren plans a three room house on Alder and Third and may add garages. Warren Deyee holds the contract. An oil firm has a 63 day option on a major lot on Spruce Street for a service station after the lease ends.
A Friday noon call to Myrtle Point firemen sent the newly added pumper to extinguish a grass blaze near Arago. The engine pumped water from a nearby pit at the old brick yard and promptly knocked down the flames before they threatened farm buildings.
The Coquille Valley Sentinel released a six section eight page edition in distinct colors totaling 48 pages. Editor Allen Young and the staff received wide congratulations for the achievement reflecting strong local effort and fair regional representation.
Officials confirm a four year delay in completing the city project raising concerns over costs and timelines. Engineers attributed the setback to supply issues and regulatory hurdles, with no new completion date announced.
