The grade school year starts next Tuesday September 7 with registration in Grade and Junior High. A notably large enrollment is expected across all grades. Final teacher assignments depend on first day enrollment. Beginning pupils six by November start. those between November and January 1 are tentatively enrolled. Some may be accommodated. nonessential details omitted.
A regular business meeting at the Walter Laird home on Monday discussed the upcoming bus driving contract. The seat was awarded to Hugh Mactloan as part of the negotiation and selection process.
Cathryn EE Miller of Myrtle Point and Thomas F Erickson of Coquille married at 2 pm on Saturday August 2 1937 at the bride's home in Myrtle Point with relatives present. The couple will reside in Coquille where the groom works in an electric shop.
Lace motion pictures will be shown at the Hiland theatre Sunday and Monday with a Sunday matinee. Local businessmen funded the showing to promote home trade in Myrtle Point and vicinity. The 15 minute reel features Myrtle Point streets departments schools clubs and industries, shot over three days with hundreds of feet of film.
The Townsend hall hosted a full house for a Townsend Club program featuring the Montana Mavericks. The trio of little girls impressed with clever acts, Prairie Rose delighted on piano accordion, and R W Nelson spoke on the Townsend Recovery Plan after rope tricks and encores.
Walter Ray Jalo aged 23 was arrested in Marshfield on August 28 for being drunk on a public highway and received a 10 day jail sentence. Edward James Earle age 48 was taken into custody in Curry county on August 28 on a larceny charge and sentenced to 30 days in jail.
Mra Ann Hillabold of Hollywood, visiting her son in Bridge since June, opened a dressmaking shop in Myrtle Point. She will do dressmaking altering and renovating and has experience in Warner Bros Studio costume work and previously owned a Hollywood shop. She has worked in several large stores in Hollywood.
A string of marriages reported across Oregon towns includes tiay N Maas and Dora May Thompas of Marshfield wed by Rev Oliver J Gilt at the Methodist church, plus couples from North Bend, Medford, Bandon, Coquille, Myrtle Point, and nearby areas. Multiple ceremonies occurred last week with ministers presiding in homes and churches.
About 40 guests attended the Woman's Club tea last Thursday at Mrs. Henry Schroeder's home. The event aimed to collect back dues and recruit new members, with Mrs. Paul Breuer and Mrs. Henry Schroeder hosting and Mrs. Lane LaFlamayo Pearson pouring.
In the Coquille valley last week over 10 visitors toured four farms to view irrigation systems. At W E Cross farm a 34 inch pump powered by a 7½ HP motor feeds an 8 inch main line with lateral lines. Cross notes operating cost around 9 cents per hour or 70 cents per acre per irrigation. The group also visited Schmidt at Norway and Butler near Myrtle Point then Clausen at Broadbent, learning about flood and overhead sprinkler setups improving dairy production.

The Queen contest manager McDuffee, a Black community member, helped create the Fair’s new theme song. The verses celebrate Coos County with lines praising farmers, cattle, crops, and local industries as the annual event returns each fall.

Two traffic incidents occur in one weekend near Myrtle Point. A truck jackknifed over a steep embankment after a brake failure, leaving the driver Campbell shaken but unhurt. Earlier, a car driven by Ben Huntley rolled over on a narrow Gravelford road curve, with other occupants uninjured but vehicles damaged.

A Queen of Coos ball honoring county candidates will take place Saturday night at the Oaks perview in the Myrtle Fairgrounds. The event features Babe's Melody Kings providing music, a newly prepared dance floor, and jitney service for attendees from across the county.
