An editorial argues against Ballot Measure 7 proposing a 1.5 percent limit on local levies, warning it would drain revenue from schools, fire police and local services. It cites Coos County losses, possible higher future taxes, and loss of control, urging defeat to preserve state and local governance.
Santa Claus will arrive in Myrtle Pout on November 30 to open the Christmas season. The Retail Trades Committee of the Chamber of Commerce approved plans at Monday’s meeting. Downtown stores will stay open late from December 14 through Christmas Eve with specific Sundays closed.
A Drivers License Examiner will be on duty in Myrtle Point at City Hall on Wednesday November 6 1968 from 9 a m to 4 p m. Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles announces applicants for original licenses or driving permits should file applications early to allow time for tests.
Representatives of the Pacific Northwest Independent Colleges will visit Marshfield High School in Coos Bay on November 4 1968 at 1 00 pm to meet interested students. Students from Coquille Myrtle Point Bandon and Powers are invited. Institutions include Fort Wright Warner Pacific Seattle University George Fox Seattle Pacific Gonzaga Willamette Linfield Whitworth Lewis and Clark Pacific Reed St Martin's University of Portland University of Puget Sound Marylhurst Mt Angel and Whitman.
Voters must write in both a presidential and a vice presidential candidate in the space below national candidates. A check beside national candidates with a written name invalidates the vote. Move within the county requires a certificate from the County Clerk or District Court. new residents from other states may vote with a special certificate.
Robert Packwood Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate will arrive November 2 at North Bend Airport at 8 45 a m. Following a rally he will attend a 9 00 a m breakfast at the Coos Bay Courtel. Public invited and youths urged to attend. Grace Cushing and Mary Powrie assist locally. Reservations through the Courtel.
The Myrtle Point school planning committee and board elected Craig Chase as chairman and Kay Davis as secretary in a joint session. Bruce Harlan presented school innovations while Bill Richardson led a high school tour to show space issues. Next meetings set for November 6 and November 18.
Myrtle Point Booster Club votes $1 per person for the year with a plan to host the next meeting after the Pacific game to view photos from the Coquille game. Members and friends invited. Investments are mainly Time Certificates of Deposit with local banks, protected by government securities or state trust agencies. occasional short-term Treasury Bills used but yield lower. Stevenson notes county treasurer must balance earnings with available cash for current needs.
A U S Cargo ship will be designated the 1968 Santa Claus Special sailing from Oakland in November. Gifts mailed by November 4 with Santa Claus Special marked below stamps will reach Da Nang, Qui Nhon, Cam Ranh Bay, and Saigon in about three weeks. Include APO or FPO numbers and use sturdy packaging. The post office offers money saving mailing options for large parcels.
Norman C Williams former Myrtle Point resident and president of Williams Air Controls Co. Portland and John Gray of Omark Industries announce jointly the acquisition of Williams Air Controls Co. The firm grew to 161000 square feet with about 280 employees and 700 products. Williams will continue R and D and international sales, possibly joining a trade mission to the Far East in November. He is married with two daughters.
Coos County Treasurer Ed Stevenson reported substantial interest earned since January 1965, totaling 1.73 million dollars for county and district funds. The earnings benefit tax districts by reducing required tax revenue and creating savings for all Coos County taxpayers.
Two write in candidates announce for Port of Coquille River commissioners. Duane Netland seeks the North Fork seat and George D. Hall seeks the South Fork seat. Three positions exist and only one name remains on the ballot for candidate number three.
