The United Good Neighbor Campaign in Myrtle Point topped its $3100 target by raising $4213, reaching 136 percent. Contributions came from Georgia Pacific 744 dollars Douglas Fir 1680 dollars and the Business Division 539 dollars. Chairman Jim King thanked contributors and volunteers for a second consecutive quota exceedance.
Myrtle Point Rotary Club will hold a noon meeting at the Myrtle Hotel featuring James Bedingfield, a state legislature member, to discuss the proposed 1 1/2 percent tax. Bedingfield will present both sides of the controversial issue and answer questions from the public.
The elk hunting season starts November 2 in eastern Oregon with Western Oregon following November 16. Areas include the Rocky Mountains elk region with Roosevelt and Rocky Mountain subspecies, rules vary by zone, and tagging and firearm regulations require careful checking before the hunt begins.
The Bre Department and Fire Prevention Week hosted a contest for first and second graders at Maple School. Winners received awards from Fire Chief Mitch Myers for best fire safety slogans. First Billy Coox with "Be a live bug not a fire bug." Second Jimmy Bell "Little people can help prevent big fires." Third Tony Vincent "Don't turn your friendly fire into a hot enemy."
More than 60 percent of the class of 1968 from Myrtle Point High School enrolled in fall term programs across colleges universities and technical schools and the service. Listed are students attending SWOCC University of Oregon Oregon State University OTS in Klamath Falls Calhoun Institute Baltimore Mary land Clark College Vancouver airline and nurses training Portland Sanatorium beauty and modeling schools plus business and education programs. Two students enlisted in the armed forces.
Young people will visit doors from 6 30 to 7 30 p m asking for pennies for children of the world. They meet at the Christian Church 511 6th St at 6 p m, ride to a party at the Methodist Church, with transport by cars. Inter church Fellowship sponsors the program.
Logan Utah August 1968 series reports that Myrtle Point High School veteran Darth E Miller taught 1965 67 and joins 25 secondary teachers in a Utah State University program to pursue a master’s in social science. The L A Office of Education funds the living stipend and study across 1968 69 and summer 1969 with classroom material development and a high school internship.
Congressman John Dellenbach campaigned in Myrtle Point urging opposition to Forest Service budget cuts that would reduce timber sale processing by 400 million board feet in the Pacific Northwest. He warned the move would cost Oregon billions in revenue and jobs, and pledged to pressure Congress to reverse the action.
