Unofficial results list Ervin Wilberger unopposed for mayor. City Council names J. Rk. Howe, George Linn, Bill Winningham, and Mary Sherps with vote counts 685, 658, 588, and 474 respectively. Statewide races show Sam Dement leading for state senator, Rod McKenzie ahead for state representative, and various county results across Coos and Curry Counties. Ballot measures No 7 and No 8 fail statewide, with Coos County votes 12 473 No 6 964 Yes and 13 991 No 5 590 Yes respectively.

Elks Increase Scholarships In Centennial Year

The Elks National Foundation boosts Most Valuable Student awards from 150 to 200 with total funding rising to 181000. Top awards reach 2500, 2000 and 1750, plus 1200 and 1000 brackets, for 200 awards totaling 181000. Oregon receives six state scholarships and 295 state total for foundation grants, with applications due February 15 1969 and December 1968 entry blanks for the Youth Leadership Contest.

Nixon Becomes 37th President in tight race

Richard Nixon narrowly defeated Hubert Humphrey to win the presidency with 287 electoral votes reported at deadline. Humphrey reportedly called Nixon suggesting a concession, but the full conversation was not disclosed as the paper went to press.

New Flu Strain Alert Warns of 1968 69 Appearance

Myrtle Point area vice president Robert Hogan of the Coos County Tuberculosis and Health Association cautions that influenza may reappear in a new form similar to A 2 Hong Kong. He notes limited vaccine protection, symptoms resembling a cold but stronger, and urges vaccination for vulnerable groups including those 45 and older, with chronic disease, homeless in hospitals, and pregnant women. A new vaccine is anticipated but not yet available.

Myrtle Point Grange gains land for new building

Clarence Strong of the Myrtle Point Sportsmans Club announced a land donation to the Myrtle Point Grange under an improvement agreement. Russell Evans, Grange master, said construction on the new Grange building will start after the first of the year.

World War I Veterans District 9 Meet Armistice Day 1968

The District 9 Veterans of World War I will observe the 50th armistice anniversary with a meeting at the V F W hall in Bandon on Armistice Day. Barracks in Bandon Brookings Coquille Port Orford and Myrtle Point join for a 10:00 a.m. start and potluck at noon. Members, wives, and widows are invited to attend the memorial services and festivities.

City Board approves bond sale for Myrtle Point sewer work

The City Council authorized sale of general obligation improvement bonds totaling 18 767 95 to cover sewer upgrades in Myrtle Point with bids due by 7 30 pm on December 2. Bond 1 will be 9 767 95 and mature in ten annual installments starting one year after issue.

Gangster weapon registration deadline set through December 1

District Director A G Erickson announced a nationwide Gun Control Act registration window from November 2 to December 1 for unregistered machine guns sawed off shotguns short barreled rifles and other gangster type weapons. Firearms must be registered using Form 4467 with the IRS.
