Oregon reports 60 motor vehicle fatalities in August, the highest monthly toll this year. Officials cite rising mileage and gasoline consumption as factors, with August vehicle miles driven up sharply from July and May's rate previously the year’s peak.

People of Powers went to the polls Monday and voted for five school board directors under the new reorganization. Harold Ross led with 113 votes, Sanford Anderson and Carl Utterback each 111, Ed Wiwatowski 103, and Mrs Ara Sheedy 93. 154 ballots cast about 32 percent of eligible voters.
Russell Papineau former proprietor of the Myrtle hotel died at 1:15 a.m. Tuesday following surgery at the Veterans hospital in Portland. He had suffered failing health for two years and was a popular Shriner with the Coos Curry Shrine club. Funeral arrangements were not announced at press time.
The Oregon state highway commission reported three bids at its Oct 13 meeting for the Myrtle Point Fairview road bridge. Lillebo Construction Co. Reedport bid $24,154.00. Sig Anderson Coos Bay $27,200.00. Henry G Stach Grants Pass $28,740.00. One bidder will be awarded at the Nov 5 meeting.
Students from the high school choral classes will present a Fall Variety Concert on November 3 at eight o'clock in the cafetorium. No admission charge. a free will offering will help purchase choir robes. David Farr of Coquille will provide special organ music. Directed by Mrs Karl Dement.
Myrtle Point High prepares a 3:00 p.m. parade with floats themed Disney style for Homecoming. The event includes a 8:00 p.m. football game versus Bandon, a half time show, queen selection by class vote, and an 10 p.m. dance with an eight piece orchestra. Alumni are invited and honored at both game and dance.
The Myrtle Point merchants and the Eve’s Point Chamber of Commerce host a treasure event with a Studebaker coupe and groceries as first prize worth 375 dollars. About 760 other prizes are on display near The Herald office as participants seek keys to unlock the treasure.
Sen John Kennedy of Massachusetts will be the guest at a dinner at the Coquille Community building Friday evening November 6 at 6 15 o'clock sponsored by the Coos County Kennedy for president committee and the county Democratic committee. He will speak informally and take questions and the event aims to finish before the football game Red Devils vs Bobcats. Tickets are 180 for adults and 100 for students under 16.
Shrine Hospital presents its annual football classic at North Bend on Saturday October 31. The event benefits crippled children with proceeds supporting Shrine work. The game features Southern Oregon College versus East Oregon College in La Grande with kickoff at 8 pm. A parade will precede the game.
Don Troxell, owner of Den's Law Shop, chosen by the Chamber of Commerce nominating committee for chamber president at Tuesday noon luncheon. Committee members listed include: Poshlits, Be Ben Daniels, Mrs. Ray Harris, and Bob Hogan announced officers to be elected at the reorganized chamber meeting. Gene Owens praised Bobcats football prospects as they face Ban Place and Red Devils, amid a lively school athletics discussion.
