Sixes Miner R J Williams Dies After Fall From Trestle

A hunting party found 67 year old R J Williams dead at the foot of a high trestle near Salmon Creek railroad 90 miles from Powers. Williams, a miner and prospector for ten years, had left Powers last Wednesday for his cabin on the Sixes and had not been seen since. The body was taken to Schroeder mortuary in Myrtle Point and burial is planned at Powers cemetery. Williams had ties to a daughter Sylvia in Cheney Washington. Burial will follow in Powers.

Funeral for John S. Root Held in Myrtle Point

Funeral services for John S. Root 84 of Montague Calif died last Wednesday were held Monday at the Church of Brethren in Myrtle Point. Officiants were Ray Marion Stern and Elder J W Barnett. Interment was in Norway Cemetery. Root born May 6 1842 in Fayette County Illinois came to Coquille Valley in 1874. he married Julia Barklow April 4 1886 and they had 14 children, nine surviving. Surviving children include Sarah Manford Myrtle Point Naomi Robison Ventura John David Root Grenada Samuel Jacob Root Broad Bent Susanna Ekstrom Montague Ellis Thompson Ashland Mary Edson Weed Thomas Leland Root and Dolores Julia Root. One surviving brother is Root Hyesat Waterford Calif.

County Nurse Accepts Douglas County Health Post

Mrs Ethel Littler long time Coos County Health nurse with 14 years public health service accepts the Douglas County county health nurse position. She plans to move to Roseburg around November 15 or when her successor is appointed after five years as county health nurse. She previously served six years as Powers school nurse and three years at North Bend.

Second Case of Polio Reported in Myrtle Point

The second polio case was reported in Myrtle Point, a 15 year old Union High student Rodney Mc Kendry was taken to Doernbecker hospital in Portland on Monday. Mrs Willard Rubbard was taken to Bertiond from Myrtle Point ten days ago. This is the county's fourth case with Norway and Coquille also reporting cases. County nurse Ethel Littler urges prompt physician exams and Portland Kenny treatment if polio is suspected. The new treatment is said to be effective if given within a few days of contraction.

Lynn Burtis, Arago postmaster and storekeeper, was hospitalized after a bucket of gravel struck his head while working a well near his store. He was the first to dive in, freeing the bucket as it fell, and is reported improving at Mast hospital.

Registration For 4th Ration Book Next Week
